There are four points to consider when choosing a salad spinner.
There are two main types of salad spinners: manual and push type. Here are the pros and cons of each one.
The manual type has a handle which you turn to make the colander rotate. By adjusting how fast you turn it, you can change the speed, and therefore how much water is spun off.
You can also choose how many rotations you use. For this type, the most important thing is the shape and size of the handle. Get something that fits your hand, and is easy to grip firmly.
The push-button type starts spinning when you push a button on the top of the spinner. They spin fast and therefore remove water quickly.
But there are many where you can't control the speed or stop the rotation on command. Look for those functions when choosing this type.
Preparing your meal will be much easier if you can wash and spin all the veggies at once. We think a spinner of 8" x 8" x 8" is enough for 2-3 people. Although of course, it depends how big you like your salads!
If your kitchen is short on storage space, don't get one that's bigger than you need. Items that are taller than wide, products that can be folded, and models with handles that can be stored inside the bowl are all convenient choices.
Since this product will be used primarily for food that you eat raw, it's important to consider how clean you can get it after each use. If pieces of food get stuck in the colander holes or water and soap get stuck in the lid, you can be exposing yourself to unhealthy bacteria.
Try to choose a product that is a simple design, and can be broken down into parts. In addition, some of these are dishwasher-safe. If yours says it is, make sure that all the parts are okay to put in the dishwasher, and also which rack (upper or lower) is safe!
It's always nice to buy something that is a multi-tasker for the kitchen. Some salad spinners are microwaveable. Others have a nice-looking bowl that can be used as a serving vessel. And others come with a cover, so you can store the contents in the refrigerator. If you're interested in these features, look to see if the spinner you're considering offers them.

This was our favorite! We gave it "A" grades in every category. As the name suggests, this can be used four ways: as a salad spinner, as a bowl, as a colander, and the bowl and colander together.
The function we liked best was the ability to use the stainless steel bowl separately. We thought this made it worth the somewhat high price.
Of course, it also works well for washing and spinning. The whole lid can be easily disassembled, so it's very simple to keep clean. We appreciated the space-saving flat design too.
This spinner won the Good Design Award in 2014. We loved how easy it was to disassemble and wash. Our experts were sure that every part got clean because it's so simple.
It was also very easy to spin - you can do it with one hand! The non-slip silicone holds it in place. Water is drained quickly and with little effort. The handle can be flattened, so it saves on storage space, too.
This salad spinner is so simple to use! You can tell if it's misaligned right away, so even beginners or clumsy cooks can whisk away water quickly.
You can throw away the leftover water one-handed once you're done spinning, which speeds up the salad making process. The parts also come apart for easy washing.
This unusual tall shape seemed like it would be unstable at first, but it actually spun very well. We also liked the solid handle that helps you to spin off water thoroughly.
Since it has more height than width, it doesn't take up much space in the refrigerator. If you want to prepare your veggies and store them for a while, this is a great choice.
You can drain the water with the lid on, too. However, we thought it was a bit difficult to wash the spinner itself, so it didn't get a higher ranking.
We were interested in the lock function, because we thought it would save time by spinning with force. But unfortunately, the time and effort it took to use the lock wasted any time saved by the fast spin.
However, the handle is easy to grip and it starts to rotate smoothly. The drainage was normal, and the lid can be taken apart and washed. But here again, it took some time, since it's a screw-type attachment.
The high-speed rotation means that water drains off easily and quickly. And the size is perfect for making a small salad. The handle turns smoothly right form the start.
But, there's no non-slip material on the bowl, so it was difficult to hold it in place. Also, we would have preferred a lid that came apart to be washed, and this one doesn't.
We put each product through 3 tests. Products were given grades from A+ to D in each test, and then an overall grade.
We rinsed lettuce in water and gave it a few spins in each product. Our experts measured how much excess water remained after spinning. We also considered how well it could be drained.
The shape of a salad spinner was the main factor in determining its convenience. Cylindrical strainers distributed force evenly over the salad, so they drained pretty well. Bowl-shaped strainers, on the other hand, often had drainage holes that were too small and we ended up with a lot of water in our lettuce.
Our test also showed that silicon salad spinners wouldn't drain water no matter how much you spun them.
Keyuca 4-Way Salad Spinner left absolutely no water behind! It also cuts water from finer leaves like mizuna mustard greens.
I was also worried about the small size of Pearl Metals Just Right Salad Spinner, but it drained water like a dream.
We checked if the handle was easy to turn, and whether or not the bowl slipped during use. We also tested how easy it was to use the water drain.
A small handle can make it hard to use a salad spinner, but having a stop button that's easy to push to halt spinning can be a deal breaker as well. We had to push the stop button for some products so hard that our fingers hurt.
We also gave high scores to products that had a drainage hole. It makes throwing water away easier and safe to store on counter tops without fear of spillage.
Keyuca 4-Way Salad Spinner isn't just a salad spinner; it's also a multi-purpose kitchen tool. The bowl-like handle is also pretty easy to hold.
We looked at how easy the product could be washed and stored. Did the lid come apart? Were there any spots that were hard to clean?
We found that the more complicated products with push buttons and lock functions were harder to disassemble and clean. In fact, very few could be taken apart completely, which made us worry about bacteria and detergent getting stuck in small places.
Strainers with fine holes are difficult to clean, aren't they? If vegetables get stuck in the holes, you have no choice but to use a brush to clean it out.
I recommend spinners like Pearl Metals Just Right Salad Spinner for easy clean up since there aren't many holes in the colander.
Unless you're on a salad diet, you'll probably want more good kitchen supplies, right? Here are some suggestions!
