How to Choose Stephen King Books

Here are some quick and easy tips to help you pick the right Stephen King book for you.

1

Choose a Stephen King Book in a Sub-Genre You Enjoy

Choose a Stephen King Book in a Sub-Genre You Enjoy

Stephen King is commonly touted as the King of Horror, but his books fall into a variety of sub-genres. If you like post-apocalyptic tales, Stephen King has penned some epic books in that sub-genre. Books like The Stand and Under the Dome are exceptional tales that fit this category, while being very different from each other.

Dark fantasy science fiction books by Stephen King, like The Dark Tower series, are popular among people who love the sci-fi genre. Many of King's horror books also include sci-fi elements, such as The Tommyknockers.

While horror is a constant theme in most of Stephen King’s books there are some exceptional romance stories, too. Lisey’s Story, Bag of Bones, and Mr. Mercedes are some of Stephen King's books that appeal to people who prefer books with some romance. However, don't expect romance to be the main focus of the book!

If your taste runs more to the paranormal, Stephen King has covered this sub-genre well with books like The Outsiders and Doctor Sleep. With so many sub-genres in King’s works, you can be sure you will find a Stephen King book that fits within your preferred sub-genre!

2

Consider How Much Time You Have to Read

Consider How Much Time You Have to Read

Stephen King is known for writing long novels. Books like The Stand and It are both well over the 1,000-page mark! However, he also has a lot of medium-length novels, such as Mr. Mercedes and The Dark Tower I. Go for a Stephen King book that you will be able to read within a reasonable time frame.

Stephen King has also published plenty of short story and novella collections such as Full Dark, No Stars. Collections like these have four or more short stories in a book, so are perfect for people with limited reading time.

If you're willing to dedicate weeks, if not months, of your life to reading, then why not try The Dark Tower series? This series has eight books and one short story, with the books ranging from 224 pages for the first book, to 845 pages for the last.

3

Look at Books That Have Adaptations

Look at Books That Have Adaptations

Many of Stephen King’s books have been adapted into movies. In fact, King is one of the most adapted authors of all time, so it's highly likely that you have seen a movie or TV show based on one of his works. Famous adaptations include Pet Sematary and It, but were you aware that The Running Man and The Green Mile are also King adaptations?

In most cases, movie adaptations can never really capture the essence of the book. Most King fans will tell you that movie adaptation rarely lives up to the genius of King’s storytelling. After all, how can a two-hour movie hope to cover all of the material in a book?

By reading the novel that a movie or TV show has been adapted from, you will learn so much more about the world, the characters, and their motivations. Some adaptations, such as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, are vastly different in places and even have different endings. Even if you think you already know the story, the novel can still surprise you!

Ask Around for Recommendations

Ask Around for Recommendations

Stephen King enjoys a massive following and getting recommendations online or from friends and family is easy. If you know someone who is a big Stephen King fan, ask for recommendations for great reads.

If you are not sure which Stephen King book to read, a little research will give you enough pointers in the right direction. For instance, you can check online for books with great reviews and feedback from readers. Websites such as Good Reads are a great resource for reviews and recommendations.

While book reviews are dependent on individual preference, they can give you a fair assessment of what to expect from the Stephen King book you choose. They can help you narrow down which book may be for you.

5

Think About Different Formats

Think About Different Formats

As well as the standard physical books, you can purchase most novels as eBooks or audiobooks. It's worth considering these options as they can often be more convenient than a physical book can be.

eBooks are easier to travel with than physical books, and with how long and heavy some of King's books can be, taking them in eBook form may be easier on your back! eBooks are also easier to search through, so if you need to quickly reference a character, place, or event, you will find them quicker than in a physical book.

Audiobooks are great for anyone that has long commutes, especially if they're the driver! A good narrator can draw you into the book with their character voices and the emotions in their voice. Some audiobooks also make use of sound effects or background music to further increase the tension.

With some audiobooks, you may even find that your narrator is Stephen King himself! Many books, such as Salem's Lot, feature King reading his own author foreword. The audiobook of Needful Things is narrated in its entirety by King, and we think he did a very good job.

An Epic Tale of a Global Pandemic

In this beautifully crafted long tale, a flu-like plague wipes out most of the population, leaving a scattered few to find their way in unfamiliar territory. From the ashes of the pandemic, survivors begin to gather together as two opposing forces in an epic struggle of good versus evil.

This extended version of the story has an additional 500 pages. For some readers, this made the book too long, and too wordy. However, many reviewers found it impossible to put down and related strongly to the characters. The fictional pandemic in the book also hit readers hard due to the pandemic in the real world.

A Gripping and Scary Classic

Jack Torrance takes the job of winter caretaker at the prestigious and remote Overlook Hotel, and moves in with his wife and son. The hotel has seen many horrors, however, and soon begins to dig into both Jack and his son, Danny. Danny has 'the shining'—a psychological power that not only feeds the hotel, but might be their only chance for survival.

There is a lot of description and backstory in the book, and this slow pace was not to the taste of every reader. However, many readers praise how the book builds on how isolated the family is. The psychological and surreal aspects of the story also come in for praise.

A Thrilling and Heartbreaking Tale of Betrayal

The innocence of children is beautifully portrayed in this book against a backdrop of betrayal and pure evil. The Institute cuts across several genres and tells the story of psychically-gifted children who are taken from their homes to the titular Institute. Who has taken them, and why are they there?

Some reviewers found this book to be too slow and couldn't engage with the storyline or characters. However, many reviewers enjoyed the pacing and how it builds towards the ending. There is praise from both long-time King fans and those who are new to his writing.

A Compelling Thriller Full of Suspense

The crime fiction angle is not one that Stephen King has pursued often, but he pulls it off well in this suspenseful thriller. The book tells the story of retired policeman Bill Hodges and his pursuit of the perpetrator of a massacre. A cat-and-mouse game ensues, and it becomes a race against time before another massacre occurs.

Some readers say that as a detective and crime thriller, this book was too predictable. Many reviewers love King's take on the genre, however, and rushed to read the rest of the trilogy, of which this is the first book. They praise the writing and say the book is full of suspense, especially as it rushes towards the end!

A Brilliant and Disturbing Tale of the Power of Friendship

This disturbing story is about a group of childhood friends struggling to free their town from pure evil. 'It' most commonly appears as Pennywise the clown and refuses to leave the small town of Derry, Maine alone. The children become adults and realize that they must return to Derry and defeat 'It' once and for all.

At 1,392 pages long, several reviewers think the book would benefit from being shorter. Some reviewers were also critical of the sexual nature of some scenes. However, It is a horror classic for a reason, and most readers agree that it is worthy of this title. They enjoyed the world-building of Derry and the development of the characters.

A Stellar Beginning to an Epic Series

An unlikely hero on a quest in a post-apocalyptic world creates the setting for The Dark Tower series. The Gunslinger is the first in the series and follows Roland of Gilead as he pursues the elusive Black Man. It doesn't fit into a particular genre and most of its appeal lies in the meshing of different genres.

For some reviewers, even fans of the series as a whole, this was a boring and confusing start to it. However, other reviewers were hooked by the enigmatic hero of the book and the portrayal of good versus evil. The series as a whole is greatly recommended by many King fans and considered to be some of his best work.

A Thrilling Sequel to One of King's Best Books

The villains of Doctor Sleep were a disappointment for some readers, who called them underdeveloped and not enough of a threat. Other reviewers loved that King reconnected them with one of their favorite characters, however, and kept the thrilling, scary and compelling style that made The Shining an unforgettable classic.

There are many comments reporting how creepy and scary this book is, and that it was difficult to put down.

Prison warden Paul Edgecombe has seen many prisoners come and go, but in wrongly convicted prisoner John Coffey, he finds something new and amazing.

The early stages of the book were a little slow going for some readers. However, others found it to be very captivating and suspenseful. Readers liked that it dug deeper into the characters than the movie version did. They say it is a beautiful and heartbreaking book.

A Beautifully-Written Tale of Love and Loss

The appeal of this book lies in its beautiful portrayal of overcoming grief, a good romance, and the struggle between good and evil. The charming Kayla, the brave Mattie, and the main protagonist Michael Noonan will stay with you long after the last page of this compelling read.

There are comments from several readers that the ethereal and dream-like writing of parts of the book make it long-winded and too slow. According to other reviewers, this book is haunting, and they praise King's ability to weave together several story strands and themes so effortlessly.
