How to Choose Drink Coasters
Before you buy any drink coasters, there are a few factors you should take into consideration. Of course, design and personal preference are important, but there are other practical issues to think about.
Choose the Right Coaster Material
When choosing a material for your drink coasters, you need to take into account how durable it is and whether it will suit your home. Here are some of the most common materials and why you should consider them.
Cork or Wooden Coasters Provide Durability
These are very durable and don’t break easily! They come in all shapes and sizes and can be made from a variety of wood, from classic oak to more cost-effective MDF. Wood coasters often have colorful designs and are coated with lacquer or varnish to add extra durability.
Ceramic or Stone Resist Water and Weather
Like anything made from ceramic, these look elegant but can be easily smashed if dropped. One of the main advantages of ceramic is how resistant it is to liquids and how easy it is to clean. They’re an excellent choice for outdoor entertaining as they won’t be damaged by rain or snow!
Fabric Coasters Can Match Your Home
These coasters can be easily matched to other fabrics in your home for a stylish, uniform look. Since they’re soft, they won’t damage surfaces or leave marks behind. However, they are absorbent and will soak up any liquid that falls on them, so be careful! They may not be the best choice for ice-cold drinks that drip condensation.
Leather Coasters Give a Stylish Look
These are soft enough that they won’t damage any surfaces, and they also have the bonus of being waterproof. Although leather coasters last for a long time, they can start to look a little worn around the edges with consistent use.
Silicone Coasters Can Survive Everyday Use
The main advantage of silicone coasters is their sturdiness and durability. They’re waterproof and aren’t easily damaged, making them ideal for both hot and cold drinks. They aren’t the most chic coasters, but their longevity makes them ideal for everyday use. Plus, they are often dishwasher-safe!
Marble Coasters Make Any Table Look Classier
These aren’t as common as the other materials and are seen as a more luxurious choice. These are quite heavy and have elegant, interesting designs. Due to their price and sense of luxury, they’re a great choice for formal hosting!
Get the Right Number of Coasters
Coasters are usually bought in sets, and these sets can widely differ in how many coasters they have. So, consider what you're buying the coasters for. If they're for a table setting, then make there are enough coasters included!
If they're for daily use, consider getting enough for each person in your household and a few extras for guests. If you entertain a lot and have house parties, you're going to need more than someone that doesn't frequently entertain.
Remember, if you find a coaster set you like, but it doesn't contain enough, you can always buy more than one set!
Consider the Material of Your Tables
The reason people buy coasters is to protect surfaces from drinks, so the last thing you want is to buy a coaster that will damage your surfaces instead! Damage can occur if the coaster is easily moved or made from a hard material.
Ceramic, for example, may have a harsh and rough ring on the bottom of the coaster that might scratch softer surfaces. Some of the harder materials, such as wood, ceramic, or marble, may come with a softer material attached to the bottom to stop surfaces from being scratched. This softer material is often cork or felt.
Find a Coaster Set With a Holder
Many sets of drink coasters come in a handy holder. If you're going to have your coasters on display permanently and ready for use, then a holder isn't as important. However, if you're only going to have coasters around when they're in use, then keeping them together in a neat holder is a great idea!
