You may be wondering if a bread knife is worth buying at all. Can't you just as easily use a chef's knife or steak knife? But bread knives have many advantages.
The appeal behind any bread knife is effortless slicing. Use an all-purpose knife to cut up bread, and you'll end up with a crushed loaf and a breadcrumb mess.
On the other hand, a sharp bread knife will keep the bread's form intact and your kitchen clean. So, in addition to beautifully smooth slices, a bread knife will make cleaning easier and reduce the risk of injuries.
Here are the points to remember when choosing the best bread knives.
"Is it sharp?" is the big question regarding any bread knife. In this article, we tested the sharpness of bread knives using white bread, baguettes, and sandwiches. Results showed that the Kyocera knife was by far the sharpest of the sharp.
A typical bread knife usually features a serrated blade, but Kyocera knives are distinct for their straight edges. Here are the details of our results for each bread type we tested.
The sharpness of the Kyocera was most noticeable in white bread. Any of our lower-ranked bread knives created a rough-looking cross-section, but it looks incredibly smooth when using a sharp Kyocera blade. We found the Kyocera most comfortable to use, as it can slice easily and with little effort.
Kyocera's knives are easy to use, even for someone with beginner knife skills. The only thing you need to make a clean slice is a light push down into a bread loaf.
Our testers noticed a massive difference in how many breadcrumbs were made when testing a Kyocera bread knife on a baguette. Lower-ranked bread knives made a colossal mess when cutting baguettes. However, cutting one with a Kyocera knife only produced a dusting of breadcrumbs.
Cut through a multi-layered sandwich with a dull knife, and you'll make a mess of your gorgeously assembled meal. When our testers used a sharp Kyocera bread knife to cut sandwiches, it sliced them easily and could even maintain neat layers.
Another important consideration for a bread knife is its easy handling. Make sure your chosen bread knife is easy to manipulate to prevent injury, especially if any children or people with limited mobility will be using it.
First, think about the shape of a bread knife's handle for the easiest handling. A curved handle better fits your hand and will allow you to use your bread knife longer without cramping. You can reduce the risk of dropping your bread knife if the handle is made with nonslip material, so consider that as well.
Pay close attention to the weight of the bread knife you're considering. Product weights vary, ranging from two and a half to nine ounces. A heavier bread knife makes cutting easier but will end up exhausting your hand with prolonged use.
Our testers found that bread knives weighing eight ounces or more felt too heavy. Therefore, mybest recommends choosing a bread knife under that weight.
Bread knives need to be kept clean. We'll explain what qualities make specific bread knives easier to keep hygienic than others.
A bread knife where the blade and handle are one solid piece is best if you want to keep it as clean as possible. This kind has no crevices, so food can't get trapped inside gaps. Many of these products are also designed to look simple and stylish, great for your kitchen's aesthetic.
You should choose a bread knife with a bolster if the variety you'd like isn't seamless. A bolster is a metal sleeve that connects the blade and handle. This design lessens gaps between the handle and blade, making it easier to keep clean. The bolster also plays a role in balancing the bread knife's center of gravity, so it can help to keep your hands from getting tired too quickly.
Kyocera's bread knife is made using ceramic materials, which are characterized by light weight and ease of maintenance. It claims to be suitable for not only slicing bread, but also for cutting bigger foodstuffs like melons, lettuce, and cabbage. With its sharp blade, our testers were able to cut off the crust of white bread with ease.
The beauty of this knife is how light it feels. You’ll hardly sense any resistance as you cut through any food. The blade isn't deeply serrated and has an extremely smooth finish. We could slice into baguettes with ease without worrying about making a mess of breadcrumbs.
Because it cut sandwiches without crushing anything, we believe that a Kyocera bread knife can be used on any bread no matter how hard or thick. It'll take a lot of constant use for your hands to tire, thanks to the comfortable curved handle and the extreme lightness of only 2.4 ounces. You can even use a dishwasher to clean this bread knife after use.

This is a small-sized eight-inch knife by Wusthof. It features an ergonomically designed, easy-to-grip handle. Our testers cut into white bread using only light force and felt little pushback, which might be due to this blade's small size. We were able to easily cut into a baguette's crust and only made a small amount of breadcrumbs.
Overall, the Classic bread knife has excellent sharpness, and cut through a sandwich without ruining anything inside. At only 4.5 ounces, you can use this knife for a quite a while without getting tired. The compactness makes it great for anyone with limited storage space. It's also appealing for having a bolster that makes it easy to clean.

The Shogun Series bread knife is a blade by Kyoku made using VG10 stainless steel and 67-layer Damascus steel designed to cut through any ingredient with minimal resistance. This bread knife benefits from its 8.5-ounce weight that can slice through bread without putting in too much effort. However, it isn't fit for extended use due to its heaviness.
While white bread, baguettes, and sandwiches were sliced through with little effort, this knife's rating dropped because the white bread's cross-section appeared a little rough. A point of contention was found in the handle's smoothness, making it feel prone to slipping, but in reality, it felt stable thanks to the overall thickness of it. You'll also easily be able to keep this Shogun Series bread knife clean thanks to the bolster joining the handle and blade.

This bread slicer is a knife by Japanese cutlery manufacturer Tojiro. The blade is made of the rust-resistant molybdenum-vanadium steel known to allow long-lasting sharpness. Overall, this bread knife has fine sharpness. White bread was the easiest and smoothest to slice among the three varieties. A great aspect of this knife was how easily the knife pulled out of ingredients with little resistance. It sliced baguettes with few breadcrumbs and neatly cut sandwiches without crushing any layers.
The slightly smooth handle felt easy to slip out of our hands, but because of the curved design, we felt it could be gripped firmly regardless. It isn’t too heavy, at only 5.9 ounces, which made it feel like it wouldn't put too much strain on your hand. But we unfortunately had to take some points off because this bread knife isn't dishwasher-safe and features no bolster.

The Triple Rivet Collection bread knife is made by American kitchenware manufacturer Cuisinart. The blade is made of stainless steel and comes with a blade cover. This bread knife caught a bit when first cutting into white bread and baguettes, but we then felt little resistance when finishing the cut afterward. Cross-sections also came out looking relatively smooth, and our testers saw few breadcrumbs made in the process. It was rated as adequately sharp after the final test, where it was able to cut through a sandwich without crushing it.
The handle material may feel a little slippery, but should feel fine to grip firmly thanks to its curved shape. This bread knife weighs in at 5.8 ounces, which is not too heavy or light, but is the perfect weight for ease of handling. However, you'll have to hand wash this knife as it isn't dishwasher-safe.

This is a stainless steel knife made in Japan by Zyliss. It includes a blade cover and is convenient for things like camping. At first, our testers needed to put in a little strength to cut into baguettes, but finishing the slice felt comparatively smooth. Although this bread knife cut through a sandwich without crushing it, it lost points for a slightly rough cross-section when slicing white bread. It's easy to use for everything other than soft white bread.
At only 3.1 ounces, this bread knife is incredibly lightweight and easy to hold, and thanks to the anti-slip handle design, it's also less likely you'll drop it. It's dishwasher-safe, but a cause for concern lies in the lack of bolster between the blade and handle, which means food may get stuck in between the gap between the two.

Inspire Bread Knife is a product made by Kai, a Japanese manufacturer known for selling cutlery, housewares and home appliances. The included blade cover makes it useful to take anywhere. Unfortunately, this bread knife lost points for sharpness because it was a bit difficult to cut into the top of a toasted sandwich. The overall sharpness was rated as adequate, given it could cut through white bread with ease and didn't produce too many breadcrumbs when slicing up a baguette.
We also love that this knife is an extremely light 3.1 ounces and will take a lot of use to wear out your hand. The handle feels a bit slippery, but it does have a certain roundness that you can grip well. This bread knife doesn’t have a bolster, so there is a concern over food getting stuck in the joint between the blade and handle.

Leo Ceramic-Coated Non-Stick Bread Knife is a product by BergHoff that is characterized by the blade's rust-proof coating. The knife has a 7.4-inch blade length. Our testers sliced through the cross-section of white bread without feeling any resistance. If you move the bread knife with small back-and-forth motions, you'll be able to produce a smooth looking cross-section.
We were able to cut baguettes without making a mess of bread crumbs, but it lost points because we had a little trouble cutting into the top of a toasted sandwich. On top of being made with anti-slip material, the handle is curved in the shape of a person's hand, making it easy to grip. However, it's a pity that this product has to be hand washed after use.

The Millennia Bread Knife is a product by Mercer that features an ergonomically designed handle. The length of the blade is 10 inches. This bread knife isn’t particularly sharp, and requires some force to cut into anything. You can make a nice cross-section on white bread if you use short back-and-forth motions when slicing, but our testers felt this knife is somewhat prone to making lots of crumbs.
We were disappointed to see that we weren't able to make a clean cut with baguettes or sandwiches either. On the other hand, it shines for being easy to grip, with a nonslip handle that's perfectly shaped to fit your hand. This bread knife also has a properly balanced weight at 6.3 ounces. We were also pleased to see that it is dishwasher-safe.

Imarku's knife is made using high-carbon stainless steel from Germany. It claims to have high durability and rust-resistance. Our testers weren't able to make a clean cut into the crust of white bread, and this gave us the impression that the blade edge isn’t sharp enough. It left a cross-section of white bread that looked a little rough.
On the other hand, baguettes and sandwiches were relatively easy to slice, which makes us believe that this product is great for bread varieties other than soft ones. It's a little on the heavy side at 7.2 ounces, but our testers didn't mind this, given how well-balanced it felt once holding it. This bread knife is also made with a bolster, so you'll have little worry over food getting stuck in any gaps.

Henckels, the more moderately-priced and casual brand from Zwilling, offers up this Classic bread knife with ergonomically designed handle shape. The blade edge isn’t the sharpest, so you'll need to use a little strength to cut into white bread. Most bread will tend to move while cutting, so we felt it would be difficult to cut by only using a downward motion with this bread knife. The cross-section of each slice we made also appeared a bit ragged.
Other issues included many breadcrumbs being made when cutting baguettes and minor difficulty with cutting into a sandwich's top slice. This knife is 5.3 ounces, which our testers believe is an appropriate, well-balanced weight. The grip felt a bit lacking due to the handle's irregular shape. However, this product benefits from being dishwasher-safe.

This bread knife and cake slicer by Kutler is distinct for its 14-inch-long blade. It claims to require no maintenance, as the blade edge can stay sharp for a long time. It may be because of how large this blade is, but our testers felt quite a bit of resistance and needed to use a little bit of strength to slice into white bread. Additionally, it was pretty tough to cut the into the crust and felt like cutting took too long at the point where we pulled the knife out. Not only was it difficult to slice into baguettes, but this bread knife dropped in the ranking after it made a huge mess of breadcrumbs.
The thick handle gave this product a sense of stability when held, even if the overall weight is a bit heavy at 6.4 ounces. However, there's no objection for how good the nonslip handle is for a firm grip, with its groove that fits in your hand perfectly.

The Gladiator Series serrated offset bread knife by Dalstrong features a special L-shaped blade. It claims to be ergonomically designed to prevent your hand from tiring even after using it for a long period of time. While the 8.3 ounces of weight can easily produce a straight cut through any bread, this bread knife will feel heavy after a while.
The rating for this bread knife dropped after it created a harsh-looking cross-section on white bread and did not feel nice to slice with overall. It seemed to make quite a mess of breadcrumbs after our testers used it on a baguette as well. It's appealing for its ease of cleaning, though, as it includes a bolster and has few irregularities in its shape, which will simplify washing. But it didn't seem to fit well when held, given that the handle lacks a curve to it.

This is a knife by Farberware featuring an eight-inch blade length. It's recommended that you hand wash this product with a neutral detergent after use. This is a seamless bread knife that excels in being easy to clean. While the light four-ounce weight will prevent your hand from cramping, our testers were not fond of holding the chilly stainless steel handle.
The sharpness of this blade was unfortunately not enough. Our testers were unable to make a clean cut into the crust of white bread, and cross-sections ended up looking jagged. It was also difficult to cut into the crust of a baguette and this bread knife caused a huge mess of bread crumbs when using it.
