How to Choose Throw Pillow Covers
Since you'll be seeing and using your pillow covers every day, it's important to choose the right ones! Here are some useful points to keep in mind.
Consider Throw Pillows Made With Natural Materials
Throw pillow covers can be made of natural materials like cotton, leather, and silk.
Cotton is Durable and Low Maintenance
Cotton is one of the most common fabrics for pillow covers. This material is durable, ages gracefully, and will last you a long time. Cotton covers are also casual and easy to style.
Cotton is gentle and cool on the skin, making it a great choice to use during the warmer seasons. Cotton covers are excellent for homes with pets and kids, too, because they are easy to clean and maintain. For example, they can be machine-washed without getting damaged.
Leather Ages Gracefully and is Easy to Clean
Leather or faux leather covers might be stiff when first purchased, but they get more flexible and relaxed with time. Leather ages gracefully, and if well-taken care of, will last you for years.
They are stain-resistant and can easily be wiped clean since they aren't sensitive to water. Plus, leather covers aren't susceptible to dust mites or other allergens, unlike other fabrics.
However, they can easily get scratched and should be kept away from the sun to avoid damage. Leather throw pillow covers might also not be the best option during summer since they can get hot and sticky when you lie on them.
Silk is Great for Skin and Hair
Silk throw pillow covers are chic and classy. They easily add a touch of shine to a lackluster space. Moreover, high-quality silks don't absorb moisture, unlike other fabrics.
Silk covers are ideal for daily use since they don't dry your skin or hair. This type of material also has natural temperature regulating properties; it will keep you warm during winter and cool during summer.
Create a Cozy Space With Wool
Wool will make your space cozier. Opt for wool covers if you're looking for something that can bring warmth during colder seasons and remain cool during summer.
Plus, this type of fabric does not attract moisture. Wool also has a unique texture that makes it great for decor, and it's also soft against your skin and comfortable enough to lie on.
For a Durable and Versatile Option: Synthetic Materials
There are also throw pillow covers made of synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon, velvet, and faux fur.
Add Texture to Your Space With Velvet
Velvet pillow covers add warmth and coziness to your space. They have a soft and smooth texture that makes them comfortable to use. You can also easily match them with different types of home decor.
However, velvet can be hard to clean and maintain compared to other fabrics. They might not be the best for people sensitive or allergic to dust since they are highly dust-absorbent. They also might not be the best for homes with pets or children because stains can be hard to remove.
Polyester and Nylon are Water-Resistant
If you’re looking for a water-resistant throw pillow cover, go for one made with polyester or nylon. Although they are not fully water-resistant by themselves, polyurethane coatings are applied to give them waterproof properties.
Polyester's water-resisting properties increase when its thread count increases as well. Moreover, polyester holds its shape well, and it's more elastic and durable than most fabrics.
Nylon, on the other hand, is light and breathable. Nylon covers are also easy to wash and resistant to mold and mildew. Overall, nylon and polyester are great options because they are both low-maintenance and durable.
Try Faux Fur for a Luxurious Look
Faux fur throw pillow covers give a warm, homey, and luxurious feel to your space. Faux fur is a soft and plush fabric that looks elegant and feels soft. These covers are excellent decorative pieces to add to your couch or bed.
However, they are not as easy to maintain because they have to be dry cleaned. This type of fabric can also mat and tangle easily if it's not taken care of. Make sure to keep them fluffed and clean to prevent them from flattening quickly and losing their fullness.
Think About the Pillow’s Design and Texture
Do you want throw pillow covers that are decorative or functional? When choosing a design and texture for your pillow cover, you can choose minimal ones with flat designs or ones with textures and embellishments.
Pick covers with minimal designs, like solid colors or flat designs, for functionality. The lack of embellishments will ensure that they are comfortable to use and lie on. You can also opt for ones that are made with softer fabrics like cotton or linen.
If you want something to use for decoration, you can go for ones with tassels, cable knit patterns, button embellishments, and other designs. These might not be the most comfortable to use, but they add a pop of interest and texture to your space.
Pay Attention to the Throw Pillow’s Closure
Throw pillow covers also come with different closures: hidden zippers, envelope closures, and permanent closures.
Zipper closures are the most common. They give you easy access to the inserts, so you can take them out to clean. Plus, you won’t have to worry about being uncomfortable since these zippers are placed on the sides of the pillow.
You can also go for throw pillow covers with envelope closures; these also make inserts easily accessible for cleaning. These covers have pocket-like flaps that keep the insert in without zippers.
Similarly, throw pillow covers with permanent closures are easy and hassle-free to use. Plus, they don't have closures that take away from the pillow’s design. However, permanent closures mean that you do not have access to the inserts or the cover for cleaning. You might have to opt to have it dry cleaned.
