How We Tested the Products

Scroll to testing method
We gathered the 10 bestselling Baby Carriers and put them through rigorous testing.
  1. Ease of Wearing

    1
    Ease of Wearing

The first thing our testers evaluated was ease of attaching and removing a carrier’s harness. This aspect is particularly crucial for parents and caretakers who are tending to a child alone.

  2. Strain on the Body

    2
    Strain on the Body

To measure the amount of physical strain a carrier could have on adults, we garnered feedback from a 6-person panel. Our group consisted of women and men ranging from 4’9” to 5’9” in height. We assessed each product based on how well they minimized physical strain according to our diverse group of participants.

  3. Comfort for the Baby

    3
    Comfort for the Baby

We define this standard for excellence in this area as: "A product with maximum breathability that can be used comfortably throughout the year without the baby feeling stuffy."

  4. Storage Capacity

    4
    Storage Capacity

We looked for storage features that promoted convenience for parents and caretakers, notably a pocket for small accessories and a storage bag.

  5. Carrying Versatility

    5
    Carrying Versatility

A baby carrier with multiple holding positions allows it to grow alongside your child, ensuring prolonged use and something that could potentially last years.

Do You Really Need a Baby Carrier?

Baby Carriers Are a Must-Have Item

Baby Carriers Are a Must-Have Item

We surveyed over 100 parents and found that over 90% of the participants recommended purchasing a baby carrier well before the due date. Among that 90%, 70% said they started using the carrier right after leaving the hospital. According to one respondent: “After giving birth, I was busy taking care of my baby and didn’t have time to shop.”

After all, taking care of your newborn becomes the top priority, thus leading to a busy daily routine. Considering the physical challenges that postpartum mothers face, leaving the house for an extended period may not be an option. Thus, the best time to get a carrier is well before your due date.

Which is Better: A Baby Wrap or a Baby Carrier?

For Home or on the Go — Baby Carriers

For Home or on the Go — Baby Carriers

A baby wrap provides a snug fit that’s ideal for putting young infants to sleep, and it’s often cheaper than a carrier. However, you can only use a wrap for about a year since holding a growing baby that way will eventually strain your neck and back.

A baby carrier is more comfortable for adults and plenty supportive for newborns, infants, and toddlers. Some carriers can be used from birth until age 3, which eliminates the need for a quick replacement. Your child will outgrow a baby wrap much sooner than a carrier.

How to Choose Baby Carriers

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Baby Carriers.

1

We Recommend a Baby Carrier With a Waist Belt

Evenly Distributes Baby’s Weight to Reduce Shoulder Tension

Evenly Distributes Baby’s Weight to Reduce Shoulder Tension

A baby carrier with a waist belt does a better job of preventing strain because it evenly distributes the baby’s weight across your shoulders and around your torso. This type of design allows you to comfortably carry newborns and babies weighing 10 kg (22 lbs.) or more.

On the other hand, a carrier without a waist belt will place too much stress on your shoulders. This will especially make it difficult to carry bigger infants and toddlers.

2

Look for Padded Shoulder Belts and a Wide, Thick Waist Belt

A Weight-Distributing Design Makes a Difference

A Weight-Distributing Design Makes a Difference

We discovered the best baby carriers put less strain on your body, regardless of whether you’re holding a newborn or a toddler.

In our tests, we used baby dolls that weighed the same as a 4-month-old child and a 12-month-old child. Participants then wore the carriers with the dolls inside. Ultimately, they found that carriers with padded shoulder straps and a wide, thick waist belt offered easier carrying of babies of any age for longer periods without excessive strain. According to our participants: “Although you feel the baby’s weight, it’s evenly distributed across the shoulders and torso, making this type more comfortable.”

On the other hand, participants gave less favorable feedback about carriers with thin shoulder straps and waist belts, with one saying: “The straps and belt dig into my shoulders and waist, and I can feel the heavy weight up front.” Based on this feedback, carriers with thinner straps induce more strain, so they’re not ideal for long outings.

A Thick, Wide Belt Makes it Easy to Hold Your Baby

A Thick, Wide Belt Makes it Easy to Hold Your Baby

Our test results showed that the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier Harmony and the Beco Gemini Cool Mesh Baby Carrier were the best at reducing strain on the body thanks to thick, wide belts. We found that they provide enough support even as a baby grows, so we highly recommend these two products if you want a carrier you can comfortably use for years.

3

A Front Buckle is Easier to Handle Than a Back Buckle

Make Adjustment Easy and Hassle-Free

Make Adjustment Easy and Hassle-Free

Most carriers either have a front buckle or a back buckle. A front buckle proves to be the easiest to handle, as you’ll be able to see what you’re doing. You’ll also be able to attach a front buckle with one hand while you’re supporting your baby with the other. Plus, it’s easier to handle if your muscles are stiff or sore.

A back buckle is more difficult to put on since you’ll have to reach behind to fasten it, and you’ll need both hands to do that. If your back is sore, it’ll be especially difficult to put on by yourself. In that case, you’ll need to have somewhere to place your baby or have someone else with you to help.

Kensuke Higuchi
Former baby gear sales; mybest Head of Baby GearKensuke Higuchi

I purchased a carrier with a back buckle, but my body was so stiff that I couldn't put it on by myself, so I ended up buying one with a front buckle.

Go With a Front Buckle Attachment With a Magnetic Latch

Go With a Front Buckle Attachment With a Magnetic Latch

Out of all the carriers we tested with a front buckle, the ones that came equipped with a magnetic buckle performed the best. The Colugo The Baby Carrier and GRACO Cradle Me 4-in-1 Baby Carrier, in particular, offered the most hassle-free usage.

4

Find Features That Offer the Most Comfort for Parents and Babies

Because baby carriers are one of the most frequently used childcare products, they should be easy and comfortable to use. Here are the key factors related to comfort:

Full Mesh Carriers Prevent Babies From Overheating

Full Mesh Carriers Prevent Babies From Overheating

Ventilation presents a concern when you’re carrying your baby for a long time.

You can protect your child from the cold by layering with the right materials, whereas protection from heat requires the right material.

Mesh is breathable and prevents stuffiness. A baby’s body temperature averages 37 degrees Celsius (98 degrees Fahrenheit), which is slightly higher than the average adult's. Moreover, babies often feel warm even during the colder months because of constant close contact and being swaddled. Consequently, if they get too warm and uncomfortable, babies might start crying. A carrier made from mesh would make for more comfortable outings for both parents and babies, no matter the weather.

Large Pockets Offer Storage for Essential Items During Outings

Large Pockets Offer Storage for Essential Items During Outings

Look for a carrier with spacious pockets. A large pocket that fits a smartphone and other necessities will make trips and outings smoother. Some carriers might lack pockets, while others have only small ones.

5

We Recommend a Carrier That Allows Your Baby to Face Any Direction

Multiple Configurations Provide Flexibility

Multiple Configurations Provide Flexibility

Different baby carriers feature a variety of carrying styles, like front-facing, piggy-back, side-carrying, and so on. Opt for carriers that allow for multiple carrying positions, as they’ll better adapt to your child's changing comfort preferences and overall growth.

For instance, front-facing carrying is useful for distracting fussy babies by showing them their surroundings. Back carrying (also known as “piggy-back”) is convenient for tasks like housework as it offers a clear view of your surroundings.

A carrier with facing-in, front-facing, and back-carrying options provides versatility for your child’s different stages and preferences. While back carrying is not a necessity, this option comes in handy when your child starts walking by allowing for easy on-and-off transitions during short walking periods. Hip carrying can be beneficial during the phase when your child is transitioning to walking, as it minimizes strain on your back during frequent lifting and walking.

6

To Prevent Naptime Disturbances, a Hood Is Even Better

Effective as a Sleep Mask and Protects Against the Sun’s Rays

Effective as a Sleep Mask and Protects Against the Sun’s Rays

A carrier with a hood attached will help your baby to sleep longer since it’ll shield their eyes from the light while offering protection against the elements. While you can use a blanket as a cover for your baby, it becomes one more thing to have to carry around, and it might not stay in place. So an attached hood is another trait to look for when shopping for a carrier.

mybest's Top Choice: Features Breathable 3D Mesh and a Comfortable Design

What we loved

  • The front buckle is easy to attach and unlock
  • Cool, breathable mesh is comfortable for parents and babies

What we didn't love

  • The lack of a hood, thus needing to carry an extra blanket
  • Not having pockets or a pouch

Why you should buy it: BabyBjörn's Baby Carrier Harmony is suitable for newborns, infants, and toddlers up to 36 months. It’s made of stretchable 3D mesh material, boasting excellent breathability and a snug fit. The front buckle is easy to put on and remove. The carrier is designed for optimal comfort with minimal strain on the body.

The belt can be easily adjusted by pulling it forward. Simple harnessing and removal make it convenient for carrying newborns. It has thick, padded shoulder straps with a seam in the center, plus a wide, thick belt that wraps around the waist. We received positive feedback from participants of various body types. They said: "The shoulder and waist pads are firm without digging into the skin, thus not causing any strain." It’s comfortable for both men and women to carry for a long time.

It accommodates a range of carrying positions, including facing-in, front-facing, and back-carrying. This will allow it to adapt to your child's growth and changing comfort preferences. The product is perfect for parents who need to use a baby carrier for long periods. The 3D mesh material provides excellent breathability even in hot weather, and the overall design won’t tax the body.

What to keep in mind: This carrier doesn’t provide any shade from the sun, so you need to have a blanket on hand. The lack of pockets is another drawback.

Perfect for Infants and Toddlers

What we loved

  • The magnetic front buckle fastens securely
  • Comfortable padded straps and harness

What we didn't love

  • Lacks pockets or pouches so you’ll need to carry a separate bag
  • Some discomfort around the waist, per our female participants

Why you should buy it: Graco's Cradle Me 4-in-1 Baby Carrier is suitable for the newborn stage to around 36 months. The magnetic front buckle allows for a smooth attachment, and the shoulder belt can be adjusted by pulling it forward with minimal effort. This ease of use is especially convenient for mothers, fathers, and caretakers carrying newborns.

It features thick shoulder pads with a seam that goes down the middle and a wide, thick belt that wraps around the waist. According to our testing panel: “The shoulder and waist pads are firm, do not dig in, and do not cause muscular strain." It’s comfortable for long-haul carrying and accommodates various positions, including facing-in, front-facing, and back-carrying. Your child will have no issue adjusting to it.

With minimal strain on the body, a mesh material exterior, and a sunshade, this product is an excellent choice for those who want to comfortably carry their baby for extended periods in any type of weather.

What to keep in mind: No pockets or pouch. Some female test participants mentioned that there’s a degree of strain around the waist.

This Easy-to-Attach Carrier Includes a Large Zippered Pocket

What we loved

  • The accessory pouch is roomy and has a zipper to keep items secure
  • A magnetic front buckle makes for easy attachment when putting the carrier on

What we didn't love

  • The exterior material doesn’t allow for much ventilation
  • The waist strap might dig in

Why you should buy itColugo's The Baby Carrier fits children from birth to around 36 months of age. It has a front buckle with a magnetic closure, allowing for smooth attachment. The shoulder belt is easy to adjust – just pull it forward.

Thick shoulder pads and a wide, thick waist belt garnered positive feedback from our testers: “The shoulder and waist pads distribute the child's weight well, making it less strenuous [to carry]." This design also makes it comfortable for extended carrying sessions, regardless of the user’s gender.

It accommodates a range of carrying positions, including facing-in, front-facing, and back-carrying, so it’ll seamlessly adapt to a growing child’s comfort preferences. The large pouch can easily fit a smartphone or receiving blanket, and it has a zipper to prevent items from falling out. This attention to detail provides optimal convenience and ease of use.

What to keep in mind: The exterior is not made entirely of mesh, so its breathability is a concern. Feedback from female testers mentioned that the waist pad is slightly firm, and there were concerns about it digging in.

Fits Children up to 4 Years Old but the Back Buckle Is Tricky to Handle

What we loved

  • This carrier distributes weight evenly between the shoulders, back, and torso
  • It can accommodate most children up to 4 years old

What we didn't love

  • Having to attach the buckle in the back makes it impossible to use without help
  • Lacks convenience features like a hood and an accessory pocket

Why you should buy itBeco's Gemini Cool Mesh Baby Carrier accommodates newborns, infants, and toddlers up to 48 months. According to our expert product testers, "The soft and wide shoulder pads and waist pad make it less strenuous, and there was no issue with it digging into the skin.” This makes it a solid candidate for long excursions.

You can adjust the carrying positions to face in, face front, and piggy-back – allowing it to adapt as your child does. While not fully mesh, the extensive mesh material against the child's back reduces the likelihood of discomfort, especially in hot weather.

What to keep in mind: Since this carrier buckles from the back, it took some time for our testers to put it on. Additionally, the belt's resistance and the need for some force for adjustment were noted as drawbacks. While it comes with a pocket, it’s rather small. There’s also no sunshade, so carrying an extra blanket may be necessary.

Although it’s a little bit difficult to put on, this carrier is recommended for parents and caretakers who want a design that won’t strain the body too much.

Excellent Weight Distribution, but Back Buckle is Fiddly to Maneuver

What we loved

  • Great support and weight distribution, especially for those with lower back pain
  • Protective hood for sunlight, wind, and rain

What we didn't love

  • Requires a lot of time and effort to attach the buckle in the back
  • The outer material isn’t made of mesh so it may not ventilate as well

Why you should buy it: LILLEbaby's Complete 6-in-1 All Seasons baby carrier can be used from birth until around 48 months. Adjusting the shoulder belt is a cinch – simply pull the string forward gently. Feedback from testers emphasized the comfort provided by its "soft, wide, and thick shoulder pads, along with large and supportive padding around the waist." There was no issue using this carrier for an extended period.

This carrier fits children up to 4 years old, and you can configure it to face in, face front, or piggy-back. A hood plus a mesh interior allows it to be used in all types of weather.

What to keep in mind: The back buckle can be difficult to attach and detach, especially if you’re alone. Since it’s not completely made of mesh, there is some concern about ventilation. It does not come with pockets or pouches, either.

Although it may be tricky to put on, we still recommend this carrier for those with lower back pain, as it puts minimal strain on that area.

Easy to Put on, but Lacks Key Convenience Features

What we loved

  • Versatile to accommodate the changing needs of a growing child
  • The front buckle is easy to attach and detach

What we didn't love

  • The shoulder belt is difficult to adjust, especially for smaller adults
  • Lacks convenience features like a shade, pocket, and mesh backing

Why you should buy it: The You+Me 4-in-1 Ergonomic Baby Carrier is suitable for newborns and toddlers up to 36 months old. It features wide shoulder straps and a belt that goes around the waist.

Being a front buckle type, it allows for smooth attachment without much hassle. It also sports various carrying positions such as facing in, facing out, and back carry, so it’ll adapt as your child grows.

What to keep in mind: The shoulder pads and waist belt aren’t very thick. Our participants noted, “Both the shoulders and waist belt tend to dig in, making the weight more difficult to carry.”

The shoulder belt is made of a slightly rough nylon material, requiring some skill and effort to pull it forward. Adjusting may be a bit cumbersome for those with less strength.

It lacks convenience features like a hood and a pocket, so you’ll need a separate bag to carry a blanket and other small items. There’s also no mesh, which will affect its ventilation (and potentially lead to overheating). This may make the product less suitable for prolonged use.

Reflective Tape Helps With Nighttime Use, but Expect Some Lower-Body Strain

What we loved

  • The reflective tape is useful for nighttime use
  • A variety of carrying options allows it to grow as your baby does

What we didn't love

  • Not completely made of patented mesh material, which could limit ventilation
  • Weight distribution isn’t as even along the waist, potentially causing strain

Why you should buy it: The ERGOBABY Omni Breeze Baby Carrier is designed for newborns and children up to 48 months of age. It features SoftFlex™ Mesh, a soft and highly breathable fabric. A sunshade will keep your baby comfortable during nap time and serve as protection against heat and cold.

The inclusion of reflective tape is a thoughtful feature for nighttime outings. It supports various carrying positions to suit small children up to 4 years old: front-facing, forward-facing, back-carry, and hip-carry. The detachable pouch is a helpful addition.

What to keep in mind: Our testers mentioned that the weight is well-distributed in the upper body, but there may be some strain along the waist. Since the harness buckles in the back, it’ll take some effort and time to attach and detach.

While the main body has some mesh material, it’s not completely mesh, which could limit its ventilation. It does feature cotton, though, which is a breathable fabric in its own right.

This product can be a challenge to put on, and its tendency to retain heat could hinder overall comfort for both parent and child.

A Versatile Design, but Uncomfortable for Long-Term Wear

What we loved

  • Mesh material gives plenty of ventilation
  • Carrier can configured a variety of ways

What we didn't love

  • The back buckle is difficult to attach and detach
  • It puts too much strain on the lower back

Why you should buy it: Tula's Explore Baby Carrier will fit babies and children up to 4 years old. You can adjust it to face-in, face-out, and back carry. The attached hood will protect your child from harsh light, wind, rain, and snow. A breathable mesh interior prevents the likelihood of overheating.

What to keep in mind: There’s a back buckle, so it’ll take a while to put on. The belt has a rough texture that requires some force for adjustment, which can be uncomfortable.

Regarding potential strain on the body, feedback from our testers emphasized “minimal shoulder strain but noticeable weight felt on the waist.” We don’t recommend it for prolonged use, and adults with lower back pain will want to look for something else. There aren’t any pockets or pouches, either.

Easy to Put On, but Not Comfortable for Child or Parent

What we loved

  • The convenient front-buckle attachment
  • It supports various holding positions

What we didn't love

  • No mesh, which may cause your baby to overheat
  • Thin, rough shoulder straps can dig in and cause strain

Why you should buy it: Infantino Baby Gear's Flip 4-in-1 Convertible Carrier is designed for newborns, infants, and toddlers up to 36 months of age. The front buckle is simple to attach, and it supports a range of carrying positions – facing in, facing out, and back carry.

What to keep in mind: The shoulder belt is made of a slightly rough nylon material, which may require some skill and strength to pull it forward. Adjusting it can be somewhat challenging. The shoulder pads and waist belt aren’t very thick. According to our testers, “The shoulder and waist areas tend to dig in, making the weight’s impact feel more direct.”

It lacks a sunshade, so you’ll need to bring an extra blanket or covering. It doesn’t come with pockets or pouches. A lack of mesh could result in your child feeling too warm. Despite its convenient front buckle, this product lacks comfort for both the child and the parent.

Easy to Put On and Take Off, but Places Strain on the Body

What we loved

  • The lack of a belt around the waist allows for quick, easy attachment
  • There’s a small zipper pocket plus loops for attaching other items

What we didn't love

  • The design may place undue strain on the shoulders and upper back
  • Limited choices of how to carry the baby

Why you should buy it: The Tactical Baby Gear Tactical Baby Carrier 2.0 is made for babies from 2 months to around 36 months. The weight of the baby is primarily supported by a pair of shoulder belts. A front buckle plus a lack of a waist belt makes this easy to put on or take off. True to its name, this tactical baby carrier has a small zippered pocket along with exterior loops on which you can attach smaller pouches or other items

What to keep in mind: The shoulder belt is slightly narrow and has a poor grip, requiring much effort to pull forward. Thin shoulder pads and a lack of a waist belt led our testers to say, “All the weight is placed on the shoulders, causing discomfort during prolonged use."

It doesn’t feature a back-carrying configuration, and it doesn’t fit babies under 2 months old. There’s no mesh, which could impact airflow.

Ease of Wearing

Ease of Wearing

The first thing our testers evaluated was ease of attaching and removing a carrier’s harness. This aspect is particularly crucial for parents and caretakers who are tending to a child alone.

Scoring Method

The testers examined each product, then assigned scores according to the criteria that reflected their level of recommendation.

What We Checked

  • Buckle position

  • Type of buckle

  • Type of belt

  • Number of buckles to fasten

  • Number of belt adjustments

  • Amount of steps involved in unloading the baby

  • Whether the baby wakes up when you’re removing the carrier

Strain on the Body

Strain on the Body

To measure the amount of physical strain a carrier could have on adults, we garnered feedback from a 6-person panel. Our group consisted of women and men ranging from 4’9” to 5’9” in height. We assessed each product based on how well they minimized physical strain according to our diverse group of participants.

Scoring Method

Our testers wore the baby carriers with dolls inside to see if the carrier placed any strain on their bodies, then assigned a score for each product's level of recommendation.

Test Conditions

  • Two females between 150-159cm (4’9” to 5’1”)

  • Two females between 160-170cm (5’2” to 5’6”)

  • Two males between 170-180cm (5’6” to 5’9”)

Our facilitator ensured that all participants used each carrier correctly.

Testing Process:
1. Testers held a doll whose weight was equal to a 4-month-old baby using the baby carrier
    2. Testers performed soothing movements for the doll for 3 minutes.
      3. Testers simulated daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, bending, and sitting on a chair.
        4. Testers took a 2-minute break and then held a doll whose weight was equal to a 12-month-old baby using the baby carrier.
          5. Testers repeated steps 2-4 in the same order with the larger doll.

          What We Checked

          • Shoulder strain

          • Strain on lower back

The Right Way to Wear a Baby Carrier

The Right Way to Wear a Baby Carrier
For proper and comfortable use of your baby carrier, you’ll need to practice the correct positioning while wearing it. Pay close attention to the positioning of your baby's head and bottom for optimal comfort and safety. Ensure that your baby's head is positioned at the same level as your chin. This promotes a snug fit and prevents wobbling.

Align the baby's bottom at the same height as your hips for adequate support. This will also minimize any discomfort if you need to wear the carrier for an extended period.

Refer to the instructions provided by the manufacturer, as the recommended positions may vary between different products.

Wearing the harness and carrier incorrectly can lead to poor posture and increased discomfort. Always check the product's instruction manual for a comfortable and safe wearing experience.
