Considering that it's made for babies, it's important that a straw cup be leak resistant. For this test, we put water in each cup and looked at how much leaked when a child shook it around.Evaluation methodPut 100 milliliters (3.4 ounces) of water in each straw cupWeigh themShake each one horizontally and vertically 10 times, knock each one over 10 times, and leave each one on its side for 10 minutesWeigh them after the tests to find the difference in water contentStraw cups that lost less weight, and therefore didn't leak as much water, scored the highest.
For babies who are still learning to drink through a straw, how a straw cup is built could make the difference in whether or not they can successfully drink from it. So we graded each one on how easy it was for an infant to drink from, focusing on the shape and size of the straw and the cup's shape. We used the following criteria for grading.Straw thicknessCan you drink from it while tilted?WeightHandle shape
It's important to keep your straw cup clean since you'll probably be using it every day. That's why we tested each straw cup on whether it can be disinfected or put in a dishwasher and how simple it is to clean. There's no consensus on how old a child should be to start using a straw cup, but many parents will start using one at six months, around the time their child starts being weaned. There's no one right age to stop using them, either; some people may take it away once their child has learned to drink from a cup, while others may move on once they feel it's become too small for the amount their child drinks.
Straw cups usually won't spill their drink even if they're knocked over, and you can also take them with you on the go. They're convenient for keeping your child hydrated while you're out and make parenting that much easier. Try to choose one that fits your child's current stage of development, so they can get started on learning how to drink through a straw.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Straw Cups.
Small children whose grip still hasn't developed will often tip or drop their cup or even shake it around while drinking, so it's vital that a straw cup is spill resistant. We found that straws with a valve inside tend to leak less when they're shaken or tipped over. And straw cups whose straw can be stored inside the cup are convenient when you need to carry them around. You generally won't have to worry about a cup full of juice spilling in your bag.
But watch out for straw cups without a valve in the straw, or that don't allow you to store the straw inside. With these, it's better to leave the cup empty while you carry it around and only pour liquid in once it's time for your child to have a drink.
More than half of the straw cups we looked at were successful at preventing leaks and spills in our tests. People buying a straw cup for the first time should consider choosing one of the top three in our ranking.
Babies between five and eight months usually haven't developed the swallowing pattern they need to suck liquid through a straw. That's why it's important to choose a straw cup that makes it easy for babies to drink from it. Thick straws with a flat shape make it easier for babies in the first stages of life to suck on them. But many babies have a hard time drinking liquid through thin, circular straws due to their underdeveloped oral cavity.
Some straw cups come with both a thick and a thin straw, so they can be used for longer while your child grows. This means your baby can choose the best straw for their stage of development. But the majority of straw cups only come with one straw, so it's best to identify the type of straw that works best for your child's age beforehand.
Children have an easier time holding onto cups with longer handles due to their small hands. Additionally, cup handles that aren't attached to the cup at the bottom are usually curved, which also makes them easier to hold. We noticed that children had a difficult time holding cups straight if they had shorter handles because their grip isn't strong enough yet. That's why it's important to choose a straw cup with a long handle.
There are some straw cups that don't have a handle and require you to hold onto the cup itself. It turns out children will often hold these in both hands, which makes for a steady grip. For young children who still haven't developed their coordination, they can hold the cup in both hands and drink without spills. Straw cups made with ease of drinking in mind help children learn how to drink on their own.
Children won't always drink from their straw cup while sitting upright; sometimes they may lie down or rock back and forth while they drink. That's why we recommend straw cups that still let them suck liquid through when it's tilted at an angle. Straw cups that put some extra weight at the bottom of the straw make it easier for children to drink even when they're lying down or leaning.
If the straw doesn't have this extra weight at the bottom, it won't get into the liquid when the cup is held at an angle, meaning they can't get a drink no matter how hard they suck. Straw cups are convenient specifically because they allow your child to drink anywhere, not just at the kitchen table. You can give your child even more freedom to drink wherever and whenever they want by choosing one that works even when turned on its side.
We found there was a big difference between each straw cup when it came to how easy they were to drink from. The three shown above get our highest recommendation for their ease of drinking.
Considering it's something your child will be putting in their mouth, you'll definitely want to keep their straw cup clean. The fewer parts it has, the easier it will be to take apart and wash. Those with a large spout and a rubber seal that's attached to the cup are easiest to care for.
Straw cups with multiple parts, on the other hand, take time to take apart before you wash them and then to put back together afterward. Since it's something you'll use nearly every day, you should look for one that's as easy to clean and care for as possible.
Because you won't only be using it at home, it's more convenient if you can clean your straw cup anywhere you go. We recommend finding one that can be disinfected to make cleaning simpler. The two most common disinfecting methods are microwaving and boiling, and different straw cups may be safe to use with different methods. Definitely try to choose one that's compatible with the largest number of disinfecting methods possible.
Some don't say which methods they're safe with, so look for one that says so clearly on the packaging. And if you plan on cleaning your straw cup in the dishwasher, be sure to find out beforehand whether or not it's dishwasher safe.

b.box's Sippy Cup is intended for children six months and older, and comes in a wide range of color variations. While testing the Sippy Cup on leak resistance, we found that it didn't leak a single drop of water no matter what kind of stress we put it through. The sliding lid also allows you to store the straw inside the cup, so you can put it in your bag and carry it around with you without worrying about it spilling, even when it's full.
The straw is on the thick side and was clearly designed so that infants could drink with it. Additionally, the handle is long, open at the bottom, and curved so that it's easy to hold. It's built so that you can drink from it even when it's tilted, meaning your child can still use it while they're lying down or getting ready for a nap.
We also found this straw cup to be extremely easy to clean. It's both compatible with multiple disinfecting methods and dishwasher friendly. The number of parts won't make it a hassle to wash, either. Taking all its strengths into mind, including ease of drinking, leak resistance, and ease of cleaning, people considering buying a straw cup should keep this one at the top of their list.

The Any Angle Click Lock Weighted Straw Trainer Cup by Munchkin is intended for children six months and up, and comes in several color variations. This straw cup performed well in our tests on leak resistance. Even after shaking it many times and leaving it on its side for 10 minutes, it didn't leak any water at all. The straw is stored inside the cup when you close the lid, so there's little risk of spills if you want to carry it around in your bag.
The straw isn't particularly thick, but it's still easy to drink from even when tilted on its side, so your child can use it while they're lying down and relaxing. The handle is also long and open at the bottom, and the curve made it easier to hold onto. We didn't feel it was any trouble washing the cup out thanks to the small number of parts it's made of. It's dishwasher friendly, and as a bonus it includes a brush specifically for cleaning the straw.
One downside is that it doesn't show which disinfecting methods it's compatible with anywhere on the packaging. But due to the excellent leak prevention and thought given to making it easy from to drink for small children, people buying a straw cup for the first time should put it on their short list.

The Baby Water Cup by Potato is for children six months and older, and is notable for a small handle which you can turn to change the design on the cup. Even after shaking it, tipping it over 10 times, and leaving it on its side for 10 minutes, it didn't leak any water at all. The straw can also be stored inside the cup, so there's little worry of spillage if you want to carry it around in your bag.
The straw is built thick so that even babies who haven't had much practice drinking from a straw yet can use it. The handle is long and open at the bottom, which should make it easy for small children to grip. It's shaped so that the straw can get to the liquid inside even at an angle, so children can drink from it when lying down.
Compatibility with dishwashers as well as multiple disinfecting methods make this straw cup easy to keep clean and sanitary. But it's made up of more parts than some of the higher ranking straw cups, so it's a bit more work to wash by hand. Even so, it's sufficiently leak resistant and built with small children in mind, so it's still a great choice for people buying their first straw cup.

Amazon's Mama Bear Weighted Straw Sippy Cup is recommended for children age six months and older and is sold in sets of two, so you can use one while the other is being washed. This straw cup didn't let a single drop of water escape even after all of our tests. The straw can be stored inside the cup so that you can carry it around in your bag or purse without worrying about spills.
The straw is thick and flat so that even infants can easily drink from it. And the handle is long and open at the bottom, with curvature that makes it easy to hold. It's built so that the straw gets to the liquid even when it's turned on its side, so your child can use it while they're lying down or resting. While it is dishwasher safe, it's also made up of a somewhat large number of parts, which adds to the time needed for cleaning. It also doesn't say whether it can be disinfected or not. But at least it comes with a helpful brush for cleaning the inside of the straw.

OXO Tot's Transitions 6 oz Straw Cup with Handles claims that it can be used by children aged four months and older. The cup has measurements on it, so you can easily see how much your child has drunk. We found that it did a great job of preventing leaks and spills. Even after shaking it, knocking it over and leaving it on its side for a full 10 minutes, not one drop of water leaked from the cup. The straw can also be stored inside the cup so that you can carry it around in your bag without it spilling liquid.
The flat shape and thick size of the straw should make it easy even for infants to drink from. The handle is long enough to make it easy to hold as well, but one unfortunate point was that it can't be drunk from when tilted on its side. It's safe to disinfect and is also dishwasher friendly, which takes the hassle out of maintenance. And there are only a few parts once you take it apart, so washing it by hand shouldn't be too much trouble either.

The PPSU Straw Cup by Gosmimi is meant for children six months and up. The handles can spin around the cup, which the maker claims is easier on your child's wrists. Even after our rigorous tests on leak prevention, it didn't allow any water to escape. By using the included lid, you can store the straw inside the unit, which makes it safe to carry around inside your bag.
We felt the straw was a bit on the thin side, but the handles are long and open at the bottom, and are curved to make it easy to hold in place while drinking. But the straw can't get to the liquid inside when it's turned on its side, which cost some points. This straw cup is dishwasher friendly but is made up of several parts, resulting in a bit of extra work to care for it. It isn't compatible with many disinfecting methods, either.

Hahaland's Sippy Cups with Spout & Weighted Straw are intended to be used by children six months and older. The cup is made from durable Tritan material, while the straw is made from food grade soft flex silicone. None of the water inside the cup escaped during our tests on leak prevention. The straw can also be stored inside the cup, so you can keep it in your bag without worrying about spills.
The straw is thick and relatively flat so that babies can suck on it easily. It's built so that the straw can still reach the liquid inside even when it's tipped over, so your child can drink from it while lying on the floor. The handles, however, are on the short side, and it's heavier than what we expect a baby could easily hold. While it is dishwasher safe, it's made up of many parts and takes some effort to clean. And, unfortunately, it isn't compatible with multiple disinfecting methods.

Dr. Brown's Baby's First Straw Cup, 9 Ounce is intended for children six months and over, and is sold in sets of two. This cup didn't leak any water when we shook it or left it on its side for 10 minutes. But it did leak just a little bit after being knocked over on its side 10 times, so you should try not to knock it around when the straw is out. But thankfully the straw can be stored in the cup, so there shouldn't be any problem carrying it in your bag.
The straw is thick and flat, showing that the maker put thought into making it easy for children to sip through. The handles are long and open at the bottom, plus they're curved for easy grip. The cup is structured such that the straw can still get to the liquid inside even when it's held on its side, so your child can drink from it even when they're lying down. It's dishwasher friendly, but we felt that the number of parts made it a bit of a hassle to clean. It isn't compatible with multiple disinfecting methods, either. Bc Babycare's Dinosaur Weighted Straw Sippy Cup is intended for children six months and older and is made from food grade soft flex silicone. We had no complaints about this straw cup's leak prevention, and even after shaking it, knocking it over, and leaving it on its side for 10 minutes, no water spilled from the cup. The straw can also be stored inside the cup, so you can safely keep it in your bag without worrying about spills. The straw is thick and flat to be easy for children to drink from. It's also easy to reach the liquid even when it's turned on its side, so your child can use it when lying down or relaxing.
But the handles are relatively short, and it weighed enough that we wondered if it wouldn't be hard for an infant to pick up. The complete unit is made up of many parts that become a chore to clean once it's disassembled. Another downfall is that it isn't compatible with many disinfecting methods. But one good point was that it comes with an extra straw to use while the other is being washed.

The Tippy Up Sippy Cup by Tum Tum is intended for children six months and older, and has measurements along the cup, so you can see how much your child has drunk. During our tests on leak prevention, we found that it leaked just a small amount after being tipped over 10 times, but it didn't allow any water to get out while being shaken or left on its side for 10 minutes. The straw can be stored inside the cup, so you can carry it around in your bag with liquid inside.
The straw is built such that it can get to the liquid even while the cup is tipped on its side, so your child can still use it when lying down. Unfortunately, the straw is rather thin, and the handles are short with the bottoms attached to the cup. The cup is made up of only a few parts, which makes cleanup simple, and it's dishwasher safe. Mushi & Co's Silicone Training Cup + Straw is intended for children six months and up, and is made of 100 percent food grade silicone. When we tested it on leak prevention, we discovered that a few drops of water escaped from the cup while shaking it. On top of this, the straw can't be stored inside the cup, so you should avoid carrying it in a bag or purse with liquid inside it.
The handles are noticeably short and also attached to the cup at the bottom, making it somewhat difficult to hold. It's a bit heavier than some of the other straw cups we looked at, which could be an impediment for some small children. Another downfall is that it isn't made to allow for drinking when tilted at an angle. We felt that overall it was easy to clean and care for. It can be disinfected and is dishwasher friendly, plus it's made up of only a small number of parts, so washing it by hand isn't any trouble.

The Training Cup with Straw Lid + Straw by Olababy can be used by children six months and up, and is made from high grade silicone. We found that quite a bit of water escaped from the cup after we shook it and knocked it over several times. Even more leaked out when we left it turned over on its side for 10 minutes. The straw can't be stored inside the cup, either, so you shouldn't keep it in your bag or luggage when it's full.
The cup doesn't have handles and is meant to be held in both hands, so even young children should be able to support it easily. But it has some weight to it, and it isn't made to be drunk from while tilted on its side. With only a small number of parts once disassembled, it was easy to clean and care for, and it can also be disinfected. We appreciated that it comes with a brush for cleaning the straw as well.
