How to Choose Handwriting Books

Even though we've given you our suggestions, we know that there are tons of learning styles and books. Maybe ours didn't quite hit the mark! But before you buy a handwriting book on your own, here are a few things to look out for.

1

Pick a Handwriting Book Based on the Age of the Learner

Pick a Handwriting Book Based on the Age of the Learner

Since each writing book targets a specific age range, you want to pick one that matches your child's level. While writing books for younger children might focus more on learning how to write individual letters, writing books for older kids are more likely to focus on whole words and even sentences.

Younger children's writing books usually have more simple instructions, and the really great ones show children how to write letters step-by-step. Text is also usually a bigger font size, and there are also examples of words that start with each letter.

On the other hand, writing books for older kids (or even adults!) tend to have a smaller font size and more complex activities.

2

Choose a Handwriting Style to Learn

Choose a Handwriting Style to Learn

Because there are different handwriting styles, you want to see if the writing book you get focuses on the specific style you want your child to learn. Manuscript is more common--it consists mostly of straight lines that can be vertical, horizontal, or slanted. Only a few letters have curves. This is simple enough for young children to work with.

On the other hand, cursive handwriting has letters that connect. Cursive letters are more curved and fluid, so they might be a better fit for older kids, given the complexity of letter formation. Also, since cursive isn't normally taught in schools anymore, cursive handwriting books are for those who would like their children to learn the style.

3

Find One That Suits Your Child's Learning Style

Find One That Suits Your Child's Learning Style

Every child learns best in his or her own unique way. While some kids can manage focusing on an activity for long periods of time, others require a change of scenery more often.

If you need writing activities for your child that will keep him or her engaged for quite a while, you may want to choose a book that is lengthy with many activities and exercises. On the other hand, if you're looking for short and simple exercises that your child can work on, a thin writing book with just a few activities will do.

Some writing books even have additional features like coloring pages and stickers, which keep your kids entertained. Themed books like the Paw Patrol writing book in our top 10 list are also a great way to spice things up a bit, as familiar characters excite kids when it comes to learning!

4

Look at the Different Formats the Book Comes In

Look at the Different Formats the Book Comes In

Spiral-bound writing books might be ideal for your child, as the binding makes it easy to make a back page lie completely flat. Paperbacks might bulge around the binding, making it difficult and rather annoying to write in, which steals from the joy of learning how to write. So if you settle for a paperback, keep this in mind.

eBooks or PDFs are a convenient option too, as you can print the same activity more than once. This is great for kids who need a bit more practice writing a specific letter or word. These digital copies also give you the option to give the same activity to more than one child, which comes in handy for play dates and group lessons!

5

Consider the Dimensions of the Writing Book

Consider the Dimensions of the Writing Book

Children who are just learning how to write need much more space than much older kids who are already familiar with how to form letters and words. Most are sized to letter-sized paper (about 8 by 11 inches), but jumbo writing books work best for little kids as they provide enough room for shaky little hands.

If you can't find one that has big enough paper, take a look at some sample pages to see how large the writing lines and the example letters are. Young kids with fine motor skills will have a harder time with small letters, so in this case, bigger is better.

Older kids with a bit more experience with writing can usually manage having workbooks that aren't as big. The lines are also usually less far apart, since they already know the writing basics.

A Book That Focuses on Phrases and Sentences

Although this handwriting book has "for boys" in its title, we at mybest don't see why girls couldn't want it too. Just ignore that part. This book aims to give kids some extra practice with writing out phrases and sentences

It focuses first on phrases which kids are to trace over, then gives them a chance to write them out on their own. Eventually, the book builds up to full sentences. At the end, it even gives kids a chance to write out their own thoughts!

While some reviewers didn't like the exclusivity of the phrase "No girls allowed" as one of the practice sentences, others really didn't like that the book was labeled as only for boys.

However, as one parent of a girl put it, the phrase can easily be switched to "No boys allowed!" Many also found that the book was a good way to start talking about such issues like gender roles--in a child-friendly way, of course!
