How We Tested the Products

We gathered the 10 bestselling Period Underwear and put them through rigorous testing.
  1. Absorbency

    1
    Absorbency

We tested for high-absorbency products that allow for less worry about menstrual leakage even when if worn alone for 6 hours on heavy flow days.

  2. Non-stickiness

    2
    Non-stickiness

Stickiness is uncomfortable, so our team checked for products that don't feel sticky on the buttocks, even on days with heavy menstruation.

  3. Comfort

    3
    Comfort

We had our testers check for products with a comfortable fit by having women try on the products and participate in a variety of activities.

  4. Absorbency After Washing

    4
    Absorbency After Washing

Some products can lose absorbency after washing, so we looked for products that can be used alone for 6 hours on days of heavy menstrual flow, even after 10 washes.

Are Period Underwear Alone Enough for Heavy Menstrual Flow?

Are Period Underwear Alone Enough for Heavy Menstrual Flow?

Wondering if you can get through the whole day with just one pair of period underwear? Let's get right to the point: it's probably not the best idea to stick with one pair all day long.

Here's the deal from our tests: We tried to see how much these underwear could handle by pretending it was a heavy flow day. What we found was they can only soak up about 1-15mL of liquid. That's not enough to cover you for a whole day without risking some leaks. After having them on for about an hour, they started to feel kind of like a wet swimsuit, which isn't the most comfortable.

Because they can't hold enough, there's a good chance you might end up with leaks, especially on your heavy days. Also, leaving menstrual blood in there too long is not the most hygienic, and may lead to odor or irritation without changing due to the bacteria growth.

So, based on what we've seen, using just period underwear on its own, especially on heavy days, might not be the best move for staying fresh and comfortable.

Cima Maliakal
Obstetrician-Gynecologist

When using period underwear alone, it's recommended to change them every 4 to 6 hours on heavy flow days and at least once every half day, even on light days.

Period Panties Work Best With Pads or Tampons

Period Panties Work Best With Pads or Tampons

Period underwear has a special fabric in the crotch that's really good at soaking up liquid, so they're way less likely to let leaks through to your clothes compared to normal underwear.

Even though they might not catch everything for the whole day, they're great as a backup for when a sanitary napkin or tampon is not enough. If you've ever had a leak sneak past your pad or tampon and mess up your clothes, seriously consider adding these to your daily lineup.

They can give you that extra peace of mind, knowing you've got another layer of protection against surprises.

Even when new, the absorbency isn't that high. In fact, the amount of fluid period underwear can absorb decreases with repeated washings.

Just like regular underwear, period underwear will leak when wet, so it is often insufficient to use on its own during menstruation. It’s recommended to use period underwear as a backup to traditional menstrual products.

How to Choose Period Underwear

Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Period Underwear.

1

Look for High Absorption and Less Stickiness

Period underwear might not be a stand-alone solution, but pairing them with pads or tampons can definitely make your period more manageable.

If you're worried about leaks sneaking past your pad or tampon, picking period underwear that's top-notch at absorbing and doesn't feel sticky is a smart move. This combo can help keep you comfortable and worry-free about unexpected leaks.

Absorption Greater Than 10mL of Water Decreases the Likelihood of Leaks

Absorption Greater Than 10mL of Water Decreases the Likelihood of Leaks

When it comes to avoiding leaks from pads or tampons, choose period underwear that can handle more than 10mL of liquid.

Our team put each product through thorough testing to measure absorption: after soaking the underwear with 0.5mL of water, we placed a 132 lb. weight on them to mimic real-life pressure and checked for leaks.

We found out that how much they can soak up varies a lot between brands, from as little as 1mL to as much as 15mL. Anything that can absorb over 10mL is your best bet for minimizing leaks.

Don't be fooled by looks; you can't tell just by looking how much they'll absorb. That's why we've listed the exact absorption amounts for each pair in our rankings. Check it out to help you pick the best pair for you.

Less Backsliding Can Prevent Discomfort in the Groin Area

Less Backsliding Can Prevent Discomfort in the Groin Area

If you've ever had to deal with menstrual blood sticking to your skin, you know it can get pretty uncomfortable, leading to stuffiness and even rashes. That's why it's a good idea to look for period underwear that does a better job of keeping the liquid away from your skin, unlike what might happen with regular underwear during leaks.

In our experiment, we simulated what would happen in an hour. We let the underwear soak up 2.5mL of liquid, then put a piece of paper and a weight on top. After taking the weight off, we checked how much moisture came back out onto the paper.

Turns out, no product was perfect at keeping the surface completely dry – there was always some moisture that came back through. But some did a lot better than others. Picking period underwear that has less of this 'backflow' means you'll likely feel less sticky and more comfortable.

Cima Maliakal
Obstetrician-Gynecologist
Cima Maliakal

If blood remains stagnant for a prolonged length of time, it may cause considerable irritation to the skin.

Although most absorbent shorts use materials and technology to prevent odor, they can still irritate the skin. Therefore, if you have sensitive skin, make sure to check for skin rashes or hypersensitive reactions to chemical substances after using it for even a short period.

2

Check Your Hip and Waist Size to Find the Correct Fit

Check Your Hip and Waist Size to Find the Correct Fit

Picking the right size, based on your hip and waist measurements, is key to feeling comfortable in your absorbent shorts. So before you go for a pair of period underwear, double-check your size to make sure you get the perfect fit. Even if you're usually a size M, picking that size without thinking it through might not work out well.

If they're too big, the shorts might not sit right against your body, moving around every time you do, which could lead to leaks. On the flip side, if they're too tight, they could squeeze your groin or stomach, making you feel uncomfortable.

Take a moment to measure yourself properly: Look for the hip and waist size recommendations from each brand. When you measure, make sure the tape measure sits at the widest part of your hips and the narrowest part of your waist. And keep that tape measure level with the floor - that's super important for an accurate measurement.

Ayuka Yokoyama
Head of Personal Care Products at mybest

Opinions vary widely on what style of period underwear is best.

If you are going to try and buy one, you are less likely to be disappointed if you choose one similar to the shorts you typically wear.

I like just-waist and normal-leg types, so I bought the same type for my first pair and have been using it comfortably.

3

A Thick Waist Elastic and Stretchy Thighs Make for a Comfortable Pair of Period Underwear

A Thick Waist Elastic and Stretchy Thighs Make for a Comfortable Pair of Period Underwear

If you find period underwear with a wider elastic waistband and stretchy leg openings, you're likely in for a comfy experience, even during your period. A wider band around the waist can take some pressure off your stomach. We heard from testers who told us things like, "It didn’t cut into my stomach and felt really comfortable." And when the elastic around the thighs gives just the right amount of stretch, it won’t limit your movements or cause any uncomfortable rubbing in the groin area.

On the flip side, if the waistband is too narrow or the thigh elastic isn't stretchy enough, you might end up with it digging into your skin or causing irritation in the groin. So, picking the right kind of comfy underwear during these times can make a big difference in how you feel overall.

4

If You Prefer Tight-Fitting Clothes, Choose Seamless Options That Conceal Under Fabric

If You Prefer Tight-Fitting Clothes, Choose Seamless Options That Conceal Under Fabric

If you prefer wearing snug outfits during your period, going for seam-free period underwear is a smart move. Seamless designs mean you can embrace your slim-fitting clothes without the worry of your underwear lines showing through, letting you dress exactly how you want without a second thought.

With seamed underwear, you might find yourself having to think twice about which outfits you choose. The main issue with tight clothes over seamed underwear is that they can create visible lines and bumps, making your outfit look a bit off.

So, if you've got plans to hit the gym or do some yoga and you know you'll be wearing form-fitting workout gear, definitely check out your seam-free options. This way, you can stay comfortable and confident in your favorite tight clothes, even during your period.

I use seamless absorbent shorts when I attend yoga during my period.

I like the fact that they don't create any bumps along the line of my backside, so even during my period, I don't have to worry about how I look.

Comfortable with Plenty of Absorbency; Pairs Great with Menstrual Products

What we loved

  • Up to 15mL absorption
  • Great for long wear
  • Seamless with plenty of room in waist and leg

What we didn't love

  • Absorbent area doesn’t extend to rear

The Proof Company's Leakproof High-Rise Brief Period Underwear features their innovative Leak-Loc® technology, which aims to offer a comfy fit.

This underwear can soak up to 15mL of liquid, roughly equivalent to what you might need for about six hours of heavy flow. While it might feel slightly damp after absorbing, it generally stays dry and avoids stickiness, which is definitely a bonus.

But, it's worth noting that after washing, the underwear showed signs of leaking when it hit about 4.5mL of absorption. This suggests that you might experience leaks more often after several washes. Because of this, it's a good idea to pair these briefs with pads or tampons for extra security.

The design includes a wide waistband and stretchy thigh bands, ensuring you won't feel squeezed in or uncomfortable, especially during your period. Plus, the seamless construction means you can wear tight outfits without worrying about underwear lines.

These are a solid choice for anyone looking to reduce menstrual leaks and stay comfortable and active during their period.

Comfortable with Great Coverage

What we loved

  • Great for overnight wear
  • Suited for about 4 hours
  • Comfortable without digging into skin

What we didn't love

  • Doesn’t take much to start leaking
  • Best with pads or tampons

The Period Company's High Waisted Period Underwear in Microfiber for Medium Flows offers a comfortable feel with an organic cotton crotch lining.

Designed to hold up to 10mL of liquid, this underwear is suited for about four hours of menstrual flow. The absorbent area might get damp but doesn't become overly saturated, avoiding any sticky discomfort.

However, a potential downside is that after washing, the underwear began leaking at just 2mL of absorption. This indicates it may not be reliable for solo use over time and is better paired with pads or tampons for added protection.

The underwear features a thick waistband and stretchy thigh bands, ensuring a snug yet comfortable fit without digging into your skin. One point to note is that because the absorbent area extends toward the tailbone, it could feel a bit uncomfortable when worn.

With its extensive absorbent area, these shorts are particularly useful for nighttime. If you're someone who moves around a lot in your sleep and is concerned about leaks from pads or tampons, this underwear could be a game-changer for you.

What we loved

  • Eco-friendly
  • Free from toxic chemicals

What we didn't love

  • Legs lack stretch
  • Thin absorbency layer

Lyv Life's Cora The Free-To-Flow Period Underwear is designed with your health and the environment in mind, free from toxic chemicals, PFAS, and azo dyes. Even though the packaging has been updated, the quality and composition of the underwear haven't changed.

In our tests, the underwear initially absorbed up to 7mL of liquid. However, post-washing, it started to show leaks when holding just 5mL, indicating a decrease in absorbency with use. Despite this, it can still serve well as a backup option for lighter flow days.

The material where the liquid is absorbed doesn’t hold onto moisture much, which minimizes stickiness. There's a bit of a damp feel, but it's not uncomfortable.

The downside is the leg bands lack stretch, which might lead to discomfort as they can rub and dig into your thighs during movement. On the upside, the wide waistband ensures a comfortable fit without feeling tight, and the thin absorbent layer makes it feel almost like you’re wearing regular underwear.

Sticky After Absorption, but Comfortable

What we loved

  • Wide waistband without feeling tight
  • Minimal chafing

What we didn't love

  • Better suited for lighter flow days
  • Can feel pretty wet after absorption

Modibodi's Sensual Hi-Waist Bikini not only looks great with its lace detail but also uses their unique Modifier Technology for absorption.

In our tests, it managed to absorb up to 6mL of liquid. However, after washing, it began leaking at just 2mL. This suggests that over time, its effectiveness might decrease, making it more suited for lighter flow days.

One thing to note is that the crotch area can feel pretty wet once it absorbs liquid, giving that uncomfortable wet underwear sensation. This might be a deal-breaker for those with sensitive skin, as even a small amount of moisture can feel sticky.

On the brighter side, the wider waistband ensures the underwear doesn’t feel too tight, and the stretchy bands around the thighs help minimize chafing.

Despite its reduced absorption capacity and potential for stickiness, its comfort and style make it a viable option for everyday wear, especially on lighter days.

Decent Amount of Leaking, but Loose Fit

What we loved

  • Comfortable high rise
  • Wide elastic that doesn’t pinch

What we didn't love

  • Dampness sticks around after absorption
  • Can only handle about 1 hour of flow

The Absorbent Panty by Bambody stands out for being as comfy as your everyday underwear, with the bonus of being PFA-free.

A big plus is its wide elastic waistband and the elasticity around the legs, which means you won’t feel squeezed in. Its absorbent area is slim, making it feel almost like you’re just wearing regular underwear – a really nice touch for those who love high-rise styles.

During our testing, it managed to absorb up to 3mL of liquid. However, post-wash, its absorbency dipped slightly to 2.5mL. There’s also a bit of a damp feeling left on the surface after absorption, which might lead to a sticky sensation.

Given it can only handle about an hour’s worth of menstrual flow and might feel a bit uncomfortable due to stickiness, it’s probably not the best option to wear solo on heavier days. It could serve well as a backup, though.

Waistband Does Not Noticeably Cut In, but Leakage a Concern

What we loved

  • Remains even after absorption

What we didn't love

  • Absorbency drops after washing
  • May cause discomfort around stomach

Hanesbrands' Hipster Period Underwear FD41MS comes in packs of three and is designed to offer generous coverage both in the front and back.

In our absorbency testing, these hipsters managed to hold only 4mL of liquid initially, but this capacity dropped to just 2mL after washing. This decrease suggests a significant risk of leakage, even with minimal menstrual flow.

While the underwear's surface remains smooth after absorbing liquid, applying pressure can cause dampness to resurface, potentially leading to a sticky feeling.

A notable concern is the thin elastic in the waistband, which some might find too tight around the abdomen. Testers expressed worries about the waistband digging in and possibly causing discomfort or irritation around the stomach area. However, the thigh elastics are more forgiving and offer some stretch, reducing the risk of chafing. This could make them a comfortable choice for those without concerns about tightness around the abdomen.

Impressive Comfort, but Limited Range of Use

What we loved

  • Overall comfortable with waist and leg elastic

What we didn't love

  • Decreased effectiveness after washing
  • Limited absorption
  • Better for lighter flow days

Thinx's Thinx for All Cotton Brief in Moderate, with its timeless design, promises comfort and ample coverage. For this review, we focused on the black color option, though it also comes in wildcat.

During our absorption tests, the brief showed it could handle up to 2mL of liquid. However, post-wash, it began leaking at just 1mL. Furthermore, the moisture lingered on the surface, leading to a sticky sensation. Given this, it's best to think twice about using these during menstruation, especially since the skin may be more sensitive during this time.

The silver lining is its comfortable fit, thanks to the elastic bands around the waist and thighs. Feedback from our tester was notably positive, highlighting that the brief "didn't feel constricted and fits well on the body," making it unlikely to cause discomfort during wear.

While the limited absorption might raise concerns for menstrual use, these briefs could still be an option for days with very light leakage. Just be sure to clean any moisture from the surface to maintain comfort.

No Stickiness, but Noticeable Chaffing

What we loved

  • Still feels dry after some absorption

What we didn't love

  • Absorption drops after washing
  • Not as comfortable for those with fuller thighs

LOLA's Washable Period Underwear is celebrated for its comfort and sleek design, crafted from breathable cotton for a non-bulky feel.

In our absorption tests, the underwear began leaking at just 2mL, and after a few washes, this threshold dropped to 1mL. Given these results, it might be best to look for other options during your period.

However, a positive aspect is that it manages to stay dry after absorbing fluids, which means you won't have to deal with any stickiness.

The underwear features a comfortably thick waistband, and the elasticity around the legs is designed to prevent cutting into the skin, making it more comfortable to wear. Yet, for those with fuller thighs, it's worth noting that the thick and somewhat rigid seams in the crotch area could potentially cause discomfort due to friction.

Great Seamless Look, but Leaky

What we loved

  • Great for form-fitted clothing

What we didn't love

  • Low absorption
  • Feels noticeably damp after absorption

Knix Wear's Leakproof Bikini is part of a lineup that includes a variety of styles like High Rise, Boyshort, and Thong, offering something for everyone's preference.

During our evaluation, we noted that the absorbency was quite low, at 1.5mL, a level that remained consistent both in new conditions and after several washes. Furthermore, when pressure was applied to the wet area, it released a significant amount of water, making it prone to feeling damp—a notable downside for those considering it as a menstrual backup.

However, there are positives. The bikini features a comfortably wide waistband that isn’t overly tight, and the thigh elastic is designed to minimize chafing, enhancing overall comfort. The seamless design is another advantage, making these bikinis a great option under tighter clothes without worrying about visible lines.

Comfortable, but Prone to Leaking

What we loved

  • A wide waistband and elastic thighs create comfortable coverage

What we didn't love

  • High rise might be uncomfortable for some
  • Not super absorbent before leaking
  • Not suited for use on their own

Saalt's Leakproof French Cut High Waist offers a unique blend of style and functionality with its high-rise fit and French-cut leg openings, accentuated by a chic mesh design.

The underwear is designed with comfort in mind, featuring a wide waistband and elastic thigh bands to reduce any discomfort or tightness. However, some testers noted that the high-rise style, extending up to the belly button, felt a bit unusual, so this might be something to consider if you're particular about the rise of your underwear.

In our absorption tests, we observed that the underwear began leaking at just 1mL of absorption. While the surface didn't stay moist, it wasn't completely dry either, suggesting potential discomfort from stickiness over prolonged wear.

Consistent with its initial performance, even after several washes, the underwear allowed a small amount of moisture through, indicating it might not be the best choice for menstrual use due to its limited absorption capacity.

Absorbency

Absorbency

We tested for high-absorbency products that allow for less worry about menstrual leakage even when if worn alone for 6 hours on heavy flow days.

Scoring Method

We dripped 0.5mL of water onto the crotch section of the water-absorbent shorts, repeated the process by placing a 132 lb. weight on it, and recorded the point at which the water began to leak. With an upper limit of 20mL, we converted the absorbency into a recommendation score, with items that can absorb more water receiving higher ratings.

Test Conditions

  • Absorb 0.5mL of water and place a 132 lb. weight on top of it
2

Non-stickiness

Non-stickiness

Stickiness is uncomfortable, so our team checked for products that don't feel sticky on the buttocks, even on days with heavy menstruation.

Scoring Method

Assume 2.5mL of liquid, equivalent to one hour's worth, was absorbed by the absorbent shorts and left to stand for 5 seconds. Then, a piece of paper was placed on the absorbent shorts, and a weight of 132 lb., representing the weight pressure when sitting, was applied for 10 seconds.

The amount of liquid returned to the paper was then measured, and the less the amount of return, the more recommended the product. This recommendation was converted into a score.

Test Conditions

  • Test Equipment: Paper towels & Scale

Comfort

Comfort

We had our testers check for products with a comfortable fit by having women try on the products and participate in a variety of activities.

Scoring Method

Our testers wore the water-absorbing shorts to evaluate their comfort level. We scored each product based on how highly we recommend them.

Test Conditions

  • Testers: Women who usually wear medium-sized shorts
  • After sitting, standing, crossing legs, and lifting the thigh, evaluated each item

What We Checked

  • Are you not bothered by a tightening sensation in your stomach?

  • Is there a rubbing sensation in your groin?

  • Are you not concerned about your underwear digging into your buttock crease?

  • Are you not concerned about your underwear digging into your thighs and buttocks?

  • Are you not bothered when you put them on and feel an odd sensation around your crotch?

Absorbency After Washing

Absorbency After Washing

Some products can lose absorbency after washing, so we looked for products that can be used alone for 6 hours on days of heavy menstrual flow, even after 10 washes.

Scoring Method

Put the water-absorbent shorts in a net and wash them 10 times. After washing, repeat the process of dripping 0.5mL of water onto the crotch of the shorts and placing a 132 lb. weight on top, and record when water begins to leak. As a recommended measure, we have quantified a recommendation rating, with items that can absorb more water being more highly recommended, up to a limit of 20mL.

Test Conditions

  • Used laundry detergent: Tide
  • Absorbed 0.5mL of water and placed a weight of 132 lb. on top of it
