A power strips is an easy way to add extra outlets to your home, but a surge protector power strip does more than just that - they protect your appliances against any power surges that originate in your home or from your utility company.
Although a surge protector power strip adds an extra layer of security to protect your appliances, they do not last forever. With every surge, the protection wears down a little more until eventually they will no longer protect your electronics at all.
It depends on the power strip and the frequency of surges, but we advise replacing power strips every three to five years.
It's also worth noting that power strips with multiple outlets aren't made for high-power appliances. They're suitable for appliances such as TVs, computer equipment, and so on. Electronics like microwaves or space heaters can easily trip the power strip!
Each power strip has a maximum wattage it can handle, so check this before you plug high-power appliances in. If you want to protect appliances that use more energy, it's best to choose surge protectors that only have one or two outlets.
Before you purchase a surge protector power strip, there are several things to take in consideration. Choosing the right one is important as it will be the last line of protection for your expensive and beloved electronics!
Surge protectors come with a variety of outlets, so consider what you need to plug in and where. If it is to be used in a home office or to power entertainment units in the living room, look for strips that have larger numbers of outlets - at least eight would be a good number!
If it’s for the bedroom, you probably need to plug in fewer appliances - four outlets may be sufficient. Also, look at how long the cord is on the power strip. If it needs to be positioned far from the wall outlet, then make sure the cord is long enough to reach that far.
Some appliances use bulkier plugs that take up more space. Strips that have outlets close together are not made for these kinds of plugs! Instead, look for strips that have the outlets spaced out or have a couple set apart from the others.
Some power strips will offer a mix of the two with spaced-out outlets on one side and closer ones on the other. Think about what you'll plug into these power strips in advance to make sure you're getting the most bang for your buck.
As well as outlets for standard plugs, you can also get strips for other types of devices. So much of our modern technology can be plugged into USB ports, such as cell phones, console controllers, and cameras. Buying a power strip that has USB ports means you won't need to scramble for adapters!
Some strips also have telephone ports so you can power a landline phone, while others even have USB-C ports.
Look for power strips that have an auto shut-off feature. That way, if there is a power surge and the strip can no longer protect your appliances, it won’t allow any electricity to get through. If it doesn’t have an auto shut-off feature, then at least get a strip that has an indicator light that will notify you if your appliances aren’t protected.
If you don’t have either of these options, then you won’t know when the surge protection burns out - your electonics will be in danger!
The joule rating is of the utmost importance - it tells you how much energy the surge protector can take before it fails. The higher number, the better protected your appliances will be. We would recommend looking at power strips that have joule ratings of at least 2,000.
However, there isn’t a visible meter that monitors the health of this. So, although a higher rating will last longer in theory, there’s no way to monitor how the joule rating is fairing or if it’s been reduced by power surges.
The surge protection value tells you how much the energy will be reduced by the strip during a power surge. In other words, it tells you how much voltage the strip will allow through to your appliances. So in this case, lower values are best.
We recommend looking for strips with a surge protection value of 400 volts at the most. Ideally, 330 volts is what you should look for.
There are six closely-spaced outlets in the middle of this powerstrip and six outlets on the edges that are spaced out. There are LED lights on the unit to confirm that your appliances are remaining protected too, and the entire strip can be easily switched off. Plus, it comes in black or white!
The unit is made from flame-retardant material and has smart technology that detects the type of appliance plugged into the USB ports and maximizes the charging speed. It has a full 3-line (L-N, L-PE, N-PE) surge protection safeguard as well.
This power strip is highly rated by reviewers. They like that some of the outlets are spaced out to allow for larger plugs to be used. They say that the unit is very sturdy and easy to attach to a wall if required. Reviewers also appreciate the 24-month warranty and helpful customer service.
You can purchase this power strip in several different varieties. We've chosen the unit that has the most outlets and additional outlets for landlines! Of the 12 outlets, eight of them can be rotated to give additional flexibility. There is a clip to keep your wires neat and tidy, too.
It can handle a maximum spike of 6,000 volts and has a power filter to minimize noise. The power strip comes with a guarantee that protects connected appliances. It does not, however, come with a resettable circuit breaker. Several reviewers report appliances being damaged after a lightning strike and the warranty not being honored.
Most reviewers praise this power strip, however. Some users say that they have had the power strip for several years without any issues. They like how some of the outlets can be rotated and that they can keep things neat with the wire clip!
This power strip comes with either an eight or ten-foot cord. There are 12 outlets, and four of them are placed apart from the rest to accommodate oversized plugs. There is an on-off switch at the top of the power strip that will also reset the circuit breaker.
The unit also has sliding outlet covers to protect the outlets from accumulating dust. The maximum wattage for the unit is 1800 watts, so be wary of this if you plug in heavy usage appliances, such as space heaters.
If you're looking for a power strip for use in the bedroom, this may not be the best choice. There is a green light on the power strip that glows very strongly in the dark and can be distracting! A few reviewers have covered the lights with masking tape.
However, the four spaced-out outlets are praised by reviewers as they can easily handle larger plugs. They also liked the option of buying the unit with a ten-foot cord. Reviewers say it is easy to mount on a wall, too.
This mountable power strip comes in black or white and has a high joule rating that will keep your electronics safe. You can easily tell if your appliances are protected, too! The lights on the unit will easily confirm that the power surge protection is still in place.
The USB ports sense what appliance has been plugged into them and will deliver the fastest suitable charge speed up to 30 watts. The unit is made from fire-retardant casing but doesn't come with a warranty.
The layout of the outlets wasn't very convenient for some reviewers. They say that they are too close together and some two-pronged plugs didn't fit into the unit correctly.
However, the reviewers praise the number of outlets, especially the four USB slots. They also like that the outlets are child-proof! There are covers inside the outlets to stop small fingers from poking inside.
Unlike most power surge protection strips, this takes the form of a tower that can sit on a desk. As well as 12 AC outlets and three standard USB outlets, there are also two USB-C outlets! On top of the tower is a large, illuminated button that can be used to power the tower on and off.
The unit has a couple of holes on the bottom so it can be mounted underneath a desk. The total wattage of this unit is very high at 3,500 watts, so it can handle many appliances being plugged in. However, the surge protection is relatively low at 1,500 joules.
Reviewers note that the green light on the tower is always lit when the tower is switched on, so it may not be the best choice for the bedroom. Most do like the convenience of the on-off button, however, and say that the light gives it a classier, more expensive look. The unique tower-style of the power strip also receives many compliments, as do the USB-C outlets!
This power strip can be purchased in either black or white. There are 10 outlets, two of which are spaced out to allow for larger plugs. The power strip has a joule rating of 2100 and an auto shut-off feature if the power strip does get overloaded.
The unit has a smart charging feature to get the best charging speed for each appliance. The USB ports can charge up to 2.4 amps per appliance and up to 3.4 amps in total. This does mean that only one heavy-duty USB item (like an iPad) can be charged at once.
There are a few reports of buyers having issues with the USB ports on this power strip, saying they stopped working after a few days or struggled to charge devices. The majority of users were fine, however. Those who have had the power strip for months say that it has protected their appliances well. They were pleased to see that it was easily wall-mounted, too!
The way the outlets are spaced on this power strip allows for larger-than-average plugs to be used. If you have particularly large plugs, there are also a couple of outlets set apart from the rest!
The two USB ports provide a maximum of 2.4 amps of charging power. The plug is flat and at a 90-degree angle so it saves space when plugged into a wall outlet. There are LED lights to show when the unit is on and grounded.
However, a couple of reviewers point out that it can be tricky to remove plugs from the tight sockets. Most praise how the outlets are well-spaced and allow for plugs of different sizes, though. They like that the outlets are set in different directions, too. Overall, reviewers say that the unit is sturdy and looks good.
There are several versions of this power strip, so you can choose the number of AC outlets, USB outlets, cord length, and color. All of the units have a safety feature where the outlets have to be twisted to be used.
There are keyholes on the back so that it can be easily attached to a wall, and there are also LED lights to show the unit is on and grounded. It has a voltage protection rating of 400 volts.
Some reviewers report issues with the AC outlets as they found it difficult to fully push plugs in and some fell out. For some reviewers, the AC outlets are also too close together.
Overall, reviewers like that they can easily see if the power strip is functioning by looking at the lights, although they do also say that the blue light is very bright. However, they praise the dust protectors that cover the outlets as well as how easy it is to attach the product to a wall.
This power strip has a unique cube design. The bottom is flat and can be mounted to a wall, and the other three sides have a varying number of outlets. The top side also features USB ports, an on-off switch, and LED lights to show that the appliances are protected.
The three USB outlets detect the appliances automatically charge them with up 2.4 volts each or 5 volts in total. This unit has three surge protection circuits and a medium energy absorption capacity of 1,680 joules.
Reviewers like the cube design! They note that it provides 12 outlets but doesn't take up as much space like other power strips with the same number. The LED lights come in for praise also. Reviewers say that the spacing of the outlets is good and having three sides makes it easier to use bulkier plugs.
With this unit, you can choose the number of outlets and the length of the cord. This 12 outlet version has six straight outlets in the middle and six on the sides that are more widely spaced. It also has cord clips and ports for phones.
This unit can take a maximum spike of up to 6,000 volts. It uses power filtration to minimize noise and the unit is made from damage-resistant material, as well. A few buyers have tried to contact Belkin about the warranty that came with the power strip, but they have found this to be very difficult. Their claims have not been approved.
However, most reviewers do like the spacing of the outlets - especially the outlets along the sides. They praise how thin the power strip is and that the LED lights that show if it is still working.
There's no point purchasing a surge protection power strip without any appliances to plug into it! Two of the most popular electronics in our homes are cell phones and TVs, so we've chosen some products to help charge your phone and display your TV.
