Many people eat granola bars thinking they're a healthy breakfast or snack option, but is this true?
Granola bars are made by adding things like chocolate, nuts, or honey to a base of oats or other grains and then pressing the ingredients into convenient, easy-to-eat snacks. All those grains will indeed get you a good portion of fiber, but since they don't contain all the nutrients recommended for a single meal, they're better considered as dietary supplements.
Also, manufacturers often add sugar or oil to granola bars to make them easier to consume, so watch out for eating too many. Some even have as much fat and sugar as other sweets, and they rarely cover a full range of vitamins and minerals.
But when we tried some of the most popular granola bars and graded them on flavor and nutrition, we discovered some that were tasty while still low in sugar, so feel free to use our buying guide if you plan on trying some out.
While you wouldn't want to replace an entire meal with just a granola bar, they keep you full enough to help prevent overeating, particularly between meals. Their high fiber and protein mean they're more filling than many other snacks, so you can use them as part of your diet program or give them to your kids as a snack.
When we compared popular granola bars to chocolate M&Ms, we found that granola bars offered between five and seven grams of combined fiber and protein, while M&Ms only contained two grams. If you're looking for a food that's filling and low in sugar, going with a granola bar will give you health benefits and satisfaction that you wouldn't get from a candy bar with the same amount of calories.
KIND bars were our favorite overall, and we recommend trying them first.
If you plan on eating granola bars every day, you'll want to find a flavorful and healthy brand. When we asked five testers who regularly eat granola bars to compare the products we looked at, the ones that received praise for their crunchy, satisfying texture while not being too sweet were by the maker KIND. All of our testers appreciated the mild, natural sweetness of the chocolate, as opposed to the ones that used artificial sweeteners.
The granola bars that didn't fare as well in the flavor department were reported to be either too sweet or taste like plain oatmeal. The KIND brand is the place to start if you want the best-tasting granola bars. KIND's granola bars, however, are a bit difficult to eat due to how easily they crumble, so you'll want to think twice before eating one at the office or a friend's house.
While good taste is essential, a granola bar's health benefits are also important. KIND's products are low enough in sugar to be eaten on a diet, in addition to being delicious. Granola bars high in sugar would result in enough sugar intake for an entire meal with just one bar. But KIND's bars contain less than half the recommended amount of sugar for a single meal, so you can safely have one when you're too busy to stop and eat without worrying about gaining weight.
Of all the products we looked at, only KIND's granola bars were delicious and low in sugar. Give one a try if you're looking for a granola bar whose flavor you won't get tired of, and that fits into your diet plan.
As mentioned earlier, one granola bar doesn't have enough nutrients to replace an entire meal. You might be able to substitute one for a meal occasionally if you're busy, but making a habit of it would put you at risk of vitamin deficiency.
If your goal is to lose or maintain weight, look at 88 Acres granola bars.
If you're going head-on into a diet and have lots of willpower, consider eating granola bars that are low in sugar and keep you full for breakfast or a midday snack. One brand of granola bars that fit this description was 88 Acres. Despite being the largest of all the bars we looked at, coming in at 45 grams, a single bar contains only six grams of sugar. Considering that this is about half of the recommended sugar serving per meal, we can say they're sufficiently healthy.
The average combined fiber and protein content of all the granola bars we tried was around five grams. But the bars by 88 Acres contained around 10 grams, giving you twice the nutritional value while keeping you full longer.
Unfortunately, the noticeable flavors of raw grains in these bars didn't sit as well with our testers. They said things like, "It's not sweet enough. I'm not a fan of the chewy, almost sticky texture." With various seeds and rich textures, they'll probably appeal to people on a diet.
Some testers said they liked these bars' flavor thanks to the "lack of artificial sweetening flavor," and people who prefer mild sweetness enjoyed them. If you're not a fan of highly sugary snacks, these granola bars could be just what you're looking for.
Sometimes you want a candy bar, and a granola bar can satisfy your sweet tooth!
When grading each product, we found that granola bars with at least seven grams of sugar were satisfyingly sweet. Our testers generally gave these bars high scores for flavor, saying, "It's sweet and delicious! I want to keep these on hand for a snack."
Granola bars containing six grams or less of sugar didn't receive as much praise. Some testers said, "It's not sweet enough," or, "It's hard to finish." If you put more importance on flavor than nutrients, we recommend choosing a granola bar with at least seven grams of sugar.
Granola bars by Happy Belly had a clear advantage regarding sweetness. Our testers loved them, saying, "The sweet and salty flavor is addictive." These bars contain more peanuts than oats, and our testers scored them high for their crunchy texture. On the downside, they have a lot of butter and sugar, but if that's not an issue for you, don't hesitate to try one.
If you want to treat yourself without regretting it later, look at Quaker's granola bars. Each bar contains only 100 calories and just six grams of sugar, which is less than half the recommended amount for a meal.
Our testers also scored them high on flavor: "They're probably too sweet to eat for breakfast but are great for a snack or dessert." With so few calories, they aren't particularly filling nor a great source of nutrients, but they are an excellent replacement for less healthy sweets.
Many people probably know the long-standing granola bar maker Nature Valley, but you should be aware of the high sugar content in their products before eating them. Some of our testers enjoyed them and said, "They taste like real honey." The light, crispy texture is similar to that of cookies.
But of all the granola bars we tried, they had the highest sugar content: a whopping 11 grams per bar. You'll use up your allotted sugar intake for a meal by eating just one bar, so you'll probably want to limit yourself to one per day.

KIND's Dark Chocolate Chunk granola bar contains 19 grams of oats and other whole grains, plus it's gluten-free. It includes chocolate chips, honey, and other flavors. This bar scored high on flavor, with testers saying things like "It's not too sweet, and the chocolate tastes natural and not processed." It has a solid, robust texture, but is still satisfyingly chewy.
As for sugar content, the Dark Chocolate Chunk bar contains less than half the recommended intake of sugar for a single meal. Even if you're on a diet, you could eat one a day without feeling like you've cheated. But we were underwhelmed with the amount of fiber and protein, which affect how long it will keep you full. With two grams of fiber and three grams of protein, this granola bar only contains around one quarter of the nutrition recommended for a single meal, meaning you'll be left feeling hungry if you tried to eat one for breakfast.
With its low sugar content and savory flavor, this one is a great choice for a snack to tide you over in between meals. It tends to break apart easily, so you might want to consider breaking it into pieces and eating it with yogurt. It gets our top recommendation for people who need a quick, healthy snack.

On the plus side, the Cinnamon Maple granola bar is low in sugar. One bar contains less than half of the sugar you should get in a meal, so you can eat one on a diet without regretting it later. In the category of fiber and protein content, we found that this bar has a respectable amount of protein in particular. While not high in fiber, it does contain seven grams of protein, which is about half of the recommended amount for a single meal. It won't necessarily replace a meal, but it should keep you satisfied for a few hours.
With its subtle sweetness and chewy texture, we recommend this granola bar for people who want to stick to a diet plan and don't mind exercising some willpower. And at 45 grams, it was also the biggest of all the bars we tried.

If you get tired of one flavor easily, you'll enjoy Quaker's Chewy Granola bars, which come in five flavors, like chocolate chip or peanut butter. Our testers loved these bars, with one reporting, "They're probably too sweet to eat for breakfast, but they're perfect for a dessert." The crunchy and chewy texture should be pleasing for most palates. But even as sweet as they are, these granola bars still scored well on sugar content. Since one single bar is relatively small, the amount of sugar per serving is low, so they're a great replacement for other types of sweets.
On the downside, they don't have the fiber or protein content needed to keep you full for long. One bar only contains one gram each of fiber and protein, and eating one doesn't give any noticeable sensation of fullness. With each bar being only 24 grams, it's not something you could eat in place of a meal. These are the perfect granola bars to keep on hand for when you feel a bit hungry between meals. And with the variety of flavors, hopefully you won't get tired of any particular one.

As you could guess from the name, Happy Belly's Sweet & Salty Peanut Granola Bars use peanuts as their main ingredient, and have a yogurt-flavored coating. Some of our testers said, "The sweet and salty flavor had me hooked," and they received generally high scores for taste. The combination of crunchy peanuts and chewy peanut butter was also a hit with our testers.
But that delicious flavor comes with the cost of sugar content. These bars contain high levels of both butter and sugar, with one containing more or less a full meal's worth of sugar. For people who are just looking for something that tastes good and aren't particularly concerned with the health benefits, these are acceptable, though. Along with being high in sugar, these granola bars don't come packed with much fiber or protein, either. One bar contains one gram of fiber and four grams of protein, which is only around a quarter of the recommended nutrients for a single meal, so you'll probably be left wanting more if you tried to use one as a replacement for breakfast.
While some people will be put off by the sugar content, these bars did place second in our tests on taste. If you know you have a tendency to eat a lot of sweets, try having one of these instead next time.

Next, we looked at Nature Valley's Sweet & Salty Nut granola bar, which is made from oats and also contains roast cashews and butter. This bar scored around the middle range for flavor, with our testers saying, "I like the sweet flavor, but it's a bit too salty." The solid texture makes it satisfying to bite into, but the strong salt flavor is a distraction.
Thankfully, the sugar content is respectably low. One bar only contains about half of the sugar you should be taking in for a single meal, which dieters will be happy to hear. In contrast, it doesn't deliver on fiber or protein content. Each bar only has one gram of fiber and two grams of protein, so don't expect one to be very filling. If you like the crunchy texture of nuts and don't mind a bit of salt, the Sweet & Salty Nut granola bars should do the trick. Since they aren't very filling, you should think of them as a replacement for other snacks.

It's unfortunate, however, that they have the highest sugar content of all the granola bars we tasted, and you'll max out your allotted sugar for a meal with just one. If you're just looking for a tasty snack as opposed to a dietary supplement, these might be for you. We weren't able to give these granola bars a high score on nutritional content either. Each bar contains 2.7 grams of fiber and 3.6 grams of protein, which is about one third of what you should get for a single meal, so you wouldn't want to use them as a replacement for breakfast or lunch.
For those who enjoy the tried-and-true flavor of Nature Valley or are curious why they're so popular, feel free to give them a try. Just make sure to limit yourself to one a day to avoid getting too much sugar.
