Air purifiers have become a common appliance, with the increased concerns about allergies and wildfire smoke. But how how effective are they?
By using an air purifier, you can remove pollutants in your home and reduce the risk of their impact on your health.
Air purifiers can filter dust, allergens, smoke, cooking smells, and pet odors. In fact, we tested their effectiveness with a smoke machine, filling a space with smoke, and then running an air purifier. The appliances cleared the air in about a minute.
In the test, we measured the removal rate for three particle sizes: 0.3 micron, 0.5 micron, and 1 micron. We used the particle size of 0.3 micron as a stand-in for smoke, 0.5 micron for dust, and 1 micron for allergens like pollen, to investigate whether the air purifier was able to efficiently remove these pollutants.
In the western United States, especially in California and Texas, wildfires are frequent occurrences. The smoke from these wildfires can spread widely, releasing particles and harmful pollutants into the air. Can air purifiers help filter these irritants?
Air purifiers can effectively remove the particulate pollutants in smoke from wildfires, but they are not very effective against gaseous pollutants.
Our testing for particulate pollutants showed that air purifiers sufficiently cleaned the air. We filled an acrylic box with an aerosol concentration equivalent to or higher than that of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Within one minute, the purifier had filtered the air. The measure we used was total particulate mass (TPM), the amount of suspended particles captured by an air purifier’s filter. The amount in the air a week Mount St. Helens erupted was 1,000 TPM. Our air purifier testing showed an average of 2,000 TPM. So even in an environment with more particles than a wildfire, the air purifier performed well.
Conversely, air purifiers using highly hydrophilic adsorbents are effective for removing gaseous pollutants, particularly carcinogenic aldehydes. At present, air purifiers with sufficient removal performance for gaseous pollutants are not generally available on the market, but we anticipate the development of such products in the future as a more effective countermeasure against wildfires.
Here are the points to keep in mind when choosing the best Air Purifiers.
Our top pick is Dyson's Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde air purifier. However, the price tag of around $1,000 is steep, so you may want to consider the comparable models we suggest below.
If you're choosing an air purifier based on performance and smart features, the Purifier Big+ Quiet Formaldehyde is overwhelmingly the best choice. It comes standard with app controls and particle size-specific monitoring functions, and its air-purification power is top-of-the-line. However, you may not want to spend $1,000 on an air purifier.
If you’re looking for temperature regulation as well as air purification, we recommend Dyson's Pure Hot + Cool Link purifier, which also costs hundreds of dollars less. Another product that provides excellent performance at a more affordable price is Coway's Airmega 250.
We will explain in detail why we recommend the Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde below.
The most important function of an air purifier is its ability to remove pollutants from the air and trap them effectively.
The Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde demonstrated a high removal rate of over 99.9% for all particle sizes, including those as small as 0.3 microns (smoke), 0.5 microns (dust), and 1 micron (pollen).
Meanwhile, the Pure Hot + Cool +Link and Airmega 250 purifiers both logged removal rates of 99.7% for all particle sizes. They did not quite reach the level of the Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde, but these purifiers still demonstrated highly effective pollutant removal.
With these purifiers, you can quickly filter the pollutants in a large living room and maintain cleaner air.
An air purifier not only filters dust and smoke but can also remove odors. In homes, a plethora of smells can fill the air, from cooking and pets to tobacco smoke.
An air purifier that can remove these smells within 10 minutes greatly improves the air quality and ambiance of your home. The Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde eliminated the odor of cat urine in just 2 minutes.
The Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde generated significantly greater airflow compared to other products. In addition, the activated carbon in its filter likely contributed to its quick odor removal.
Air purifiers are typically designed to operate 24 hours a day. And it’s convenient when a purifier can automatically adjust the airflow based on the level of air pollution
The Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde is equipped with such an auto mode, so you can maintain clean air at all times, even if you’re not home.
An auto mode is economical as it turns off to reduce energy expenditure once the air is clean, preventing unnecessary power consumption.
You can operate the Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde from the main unit or using a remote control, and it can also be integrated with a smartphone app and smart speakers.
In the app, you can monitor particles by diameter, such as PM2.5 (fine particulate matter that measures 2.5 microns or less) and PM10 (particulate matter smaller than 10 microns that can be inhaled into the lungs). That lets you see the air quality in your home in real time, so you can adjust the air purifier’s mode of operation as needed.
You can also integrate smart speakers, which will allow you to operate the purifier using voice commands, so you do not even have to get up from your bed or the couch to adjust it.
When choosing an air purifier, one of the first things people look at is cost. But keep in mind that an air purifier isn’t a one-time expense. You should also take into consideration the annual cost of the electricity it takes to run the device and the price of replacing a purifier’s filters to keep it running effectively.
If price is a concern, here are some air purifiers with low annual costs that can both clean your air and fit into your budget.
Our analysis showed that the annual electricity cost for an air purifier ranged from approximately $2.50 to $58, depending on size and amount of usage. The electricity costs can vary by up to around $50, but there was a difference of over $100 in filter replacement costs depending on the product.
When considering a purchase, please think not only about the price of the main unit, but also the total cost, including annual costs.
If you do not maintain your air purifier, it may not perform at its best because of the buildup of debris in the filter. Some products are designed to make upkeep user-friendly. Here are the features to look for in air purifiers that are easy to maintain.
The basic rule for maintenance? Clean your air purifier once a month. First, it’s important to note that an air purifier may have several filters. A pre-filter, for example, collects bigger particles, such as pet hair, and protects the main filter.
To clean your air purifier, grab a vacuum with a brush attachment. Remove and clean the pre-filter, then the dust filter that catches pollen and dust, and finally, the deodorizing filter that removes smells. If the filter is the type to maintain its shape, you can easily insert and remove it.
With some air purifiers, you only need to vacuum the pre-filter, while the internal filters just need to be replaced. Purifiers that require less maintenance may save you time and work, but they may cost you more in electricity bills.
If you’re using an air purifier in the bedroom, you want to make sure it operates quietly enough so you can sleep, right? Fortunately, all the air purifiers we tested were quiet, so you can choose the best model for you based on other factors.
When we ran the air purifiers in their lowest mode, the noise level 3 feet from the main body was, on average, 26dB (decibels). The sound was barely audible, even in a quiet environment.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends "less than 30 A-weighted decibels (dB(A)) in bedrooms at night." These purifiers operate quietly enough that they’re suitable for bedside use.

Dyson's Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde is a high-end air purifier boasting excellent dust collection and deodorization capabilities. One of its most appealing features is the MyDyson app, which lets you schedule and monitor your home's air quality levels, even when you're away.
Another big selling point is this air purifier’s dust collection and deodorizing power. Regardless of particle size, this model was able to remove over 99.9% of all particles sized 0.3 micron, 0.5 micron, and 1 micron. It captured and eliminated dust and contaminants, including fine smoke. This purifier was also able to eliminate the smell of cat urine in just 2 minutes. In addition, with its overwhelming wind power, this model could draw in the air beyond its immediate surroundings, ensuring optimal performance even in a large living room.
This purifier was also designed for quiet performance. In Wind Speed 1 mode, it emitted just 24.1dB of sound. In Wind Speed 10 mode, this model was somewhat louder, creating 43.6dB of sound. This machine is user-friendly, with a main unit and remote control that can connect with a smartphone app or a smart speaker using voice controls. The app can monitor specific particle diameters, such as PM2.5 and PM10, and also has an automatic mode. The dust sensor detects pollutants, allowing you to maintain clean air at all times, even if you leave the purifier unattended.
This product costs about $1,000, which is more expensive than other models. But it's an optimal choice for those looking for a high-performance air purifier with quiet operation.

Dyson's Pure Hot + Cool Link HP02 Purifier Heater HP02 is a multifunctional air purifier that can filter pollutants and heat or cool a room at the same time.
Despite its compact size of 8.7 inches wide, 6 inches deep, and 24.9 inches high, the air purification of this model was exceptionally good. It fell slightly short of the Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde, but it still filtered over 99.7% of any particle size. This model can also remove the odor of cat urine in just 6 minutes, so it should be suitable even for large rooms.
This purifier is equipped with an auto mode, which automatically adjusts the energy output according to the air quality. It also features a maximum 70° oscillating function, which can distribute purified air throughout a room. You can operate the device through the unit, with an included remote control, using a smartphone app, or through a smart speaker using voice commands. The app allows you to monitor and adjust the air quality. Another attractive feature is that this purifier requires no maintenance. You only need to replace the filter once a year, and the only upkeep required is dusting the unit off with a brush.
Priced at around $630, this unit is more expensive than others on this list. But you can rely on this purifier in the living room, bedroom, and kitchen, and it performs double duty as an air purifier and heater in one.

The Airmega 250 from COWAY can clean the air in a space up to 930 square feet. This purifier doesn't have a remote operation feature, but it is equipped with highly efficient dust collection and deodorization capabilities, as well as an advanced automatic mode.
The performance of its activated carbon filter and True HEPA filter is superior, resulting in high levels of dust collection and deodorization. This model achieved a removal rate of over 99.7% for any particle size and was able to eliminate the smell of cat urine in just 8 minutes. This purifier is suitable for large rooms, such as living rooms.
In addition, this model features an auto mode (smart mode) that automatically adjusts the speed of the fan according to the quality of the air. Its dust-collection sensor is highly sensitive, and it was able to detect a deodorant sprayed from 10 feet away in about 15 seconds on its own. Although you can only operate this purifier from the main unit, it does feature an air quality indicator that provides 24-hour monitoring.
The cost is somewhat high at around $400, but considering this machine’s stellar performance, it's worth the price for reliable air purification in the living room or bedroom.

COWAY's Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH can cover up to 874 square feet. It doesn’t perform as well as the same company's Airmega 250, but because it costs about $170 less, we recommend it for people who prioritize low prices.
The dust collection and deodorization capabilities of this air purifier, considering the price, are high. Although it could not completely remove 0.3 micron particles with a 99.6% removal rate, it achieved a removal rate of over 99.9% for 0.5 micron and 1 micron particles. This device also effectively captured dust and eliminated the odor of car urine within 10 minutes, so it should perform sufficiently in a living room.
The device is equipped with an auto mode that automatically adjusts the fan speed according to the quality of the air. This purifier’s sensor was sensitive enough to detect a deodorant that was sprayed from about 10 feet away within approximately 14 seconds. This model also features an Eco mode, and if it does not detect any dirt for 30 minutes, the fan automatically shuts off, which helps with energy efficiency and electric bills. The price of the main unit is affordable, and the total annual cost of filter replacement and electricity charges is economical at around $42.
Although this purifier couldn't capture minute particles, considering its price, this model performs to a high standard. We recommend this model for people looking for an effective unit that can cover an average living room while not spending a lot of money.

COWAY's Airmega 200M AP-1518R can cover up to 361 square feet. It uses the same filter as the manufacturer's Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH,so they perform similarly well but feature different designs.
When we evaluated this purifier’s dust-collection capabilities, we observed that the 0.3-micron particles were not completely eliminated at 99.6%, but the 0.5-micron and 1-micron particles boasted a removal rate of over 99.8%. This purifier also removed the smell of cat urine in 10 minutes, which is appropriate effectiveness for an average-sized living room.
This purifier comes with an auto mode, which automatically adjusts the fan speed according to the quality of the air. The sensor is also sensitive and detected a deodorant sprayed from 10 feet away in about 16 seconds. Additionally, it comes with an Eco-mode that automatically shuts the fan off if this purifier doesn't detect any dirt for 30 minutes. This unit is not only affordable, but the annual cost of filter changes and electricity is also economical at around $42.
While the purifier struggled to eliminate fine particles, considering the low price and excellent performance, this purifier provides great value. You may want to compare it to the same manufacturer's Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH before making a purchase based on your design preferences.

The 4-Stage True HEPA Air Purifier 5500-2 by WINIX can cover 360 square feet. It's budget-friendly at under $250, and comes equipped with both a dust sensor and an odor sensor.
Although we were unable to remove 0.3-micron particles during our testing completely, only 0.4% remained, and this purifier got rid of over 99.9% of 0.5-micron and 1-micron particles. We were also able to remove the smell of cat urine in 12 minutes, which is adequate performance for the size of a typical living room.
This purifier's auto-mode sensor is quite responsive. It successfully detected the deodorant sprayed from 10 feet away within approximately 8 seconds. In addition, this device features an odor sensor, which is not often included in other air purifiers. This feature enables it to automatically detect and deodorize not just dust and house dirt but also cooking odors. This device comes with a remote control, but it isn’t set up to operate from a smartphone, which is a drawback when you go to work or on vacation.
Though this purifier didn’t remove every microscopic piece of dust, we recommend this cost-effective device to people looking for a purifier that can automatically respond to odors from the kitchen and pets.

This device's air purifying power shows a removal rate of over 99.3% for all particle sizes. It can also dispel the smell of cat urine in 14 minutes. That level of performance is sufficient for an area the size of a bedroom.
In automatic mode, this purifier's built-in infrared sensor detects dirt in about 20 seconds. For those who aren't allergic to house dust or sensitive to odors, this sensor sensitivity should be sufficient. The display allows you to check the air quality in four stages. This device also works with the VeSync app, so you can check the air quality even when you're not home and set schedules by day and time. This purifier also runs quietly, so it's great for the bedroom.

Alen's BreatheSmart 75i True HEPA Air Purifier features top-of-the-line deodorizing capability, so we highly recommend it for people who are sensitive to smells.
The purifier recorded a deodorizing speed second only to Dyson's Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde, erasing the smell of cat urine in just 6 minutes. This model is also equipped with a smell sensor, which automatically adjusts the wind volume to quickly deodorize the space once a smell is detected. When it comes to cleaning, you don't have to maintain the filter in this purifier, just replace it. Even if you run this purifier continuously 24 hours a day, you only need to replace the filter once every 15 months.
The drawbacks? Its dust-collection capability and annual cost. Our testing showed disappointing results of 92.7% for the collection of 1-micron particles. In addition, the replacement filters result in an annual cost of about $100. If you have hay fever or dust allergies, we recommend you consider higher-rated products instead.
With a base price of about $770 and high annual costs, this purifier is expensive. While its dust collection capability is not particularly high, it excels in odor removal. So, if getting rid of unpleasant smells is your top priority, this purifier might be worth considering.

The Blue Pure 311i Max by Blueair is suitable for up to 929 square feet. It features high-performance dust-collection capabilities, so we recommend it for people who are concerned about dust and allergens.
During testing, we recorded a 99.9% removal rate for all particle sizes, so you don't have to worry about missing any dust. This purifier also runs quietly, with the lowest airflow setting—night mode— producing just 20.5dB of sound. Since this device operates almost silently, it’s great for the bedroom.
That said, this purifier fell short when it came to deodorizing. It took 16 minutes to completely remove the smell of cat urine. Compact in size, this purifier can fit in small spaces. Still, we don’t recommend it for use in kitchens, bathrooms, or for people who own pets. Plus, this purifier is difficult to maintain because the pre-filter and main filter are designed in a way that makes them challenging to remove.
Although the price is relatively cheap at around $225 and it collects dust very well, this model is not very effective for odor removal. But if you're mainly concerned about dust in your bedroom or living room and aren’t looking to spend a lot, this purifier might be worth considering.

The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX HP302 from SharkNinja Operating features a unique four-layer filter system. Its appeal lies in the fact that it doesn't require filter changes for up to 5 years, resulting in easier maintenance and cost savings.
Our testers gave this purifier dust-collection power high marks, as it tallied over 99.9% removal for all particle sizes between 3 and 1 micron. With its outstanding dust-collection power, you can maintain clean air even in large rooms. Running costs amount to only about $16 per year, making it one of the least expensive products in our rankings when considering total cost over 5 or 10 years.
However, this purifier’s deodorization is not very good. It took 24 minutes to eliminate the smell of cat urine, which is 12 times longer than the best-performing Dyson Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde. If odors are a major concern, you'd probably be more satisfied with either the Airmega Mighty or Airmega 200M by COWAY in the same price range.
With a dust-collection performance that is more than sufficient, this purifier provides excellent value for the total cost. You may want to buy multiple units to purify the air in every room.

The Shark Clean Sense Air Purifier MAX HP232 from SharkNinja Operating boasts a high dust-collection capacity. However, its annual costs add up, so you may prefer the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX HP302 from the same manufacturer.
This purifier’s dust-collection capacity stood out, with top-of-the-line removal rates of 99.9% at 0.3 micron, 99.99% at 0.5 micron, and 99.8% at 1 micron. This model’s noise level was also excellent, registering at a quiet 22.5dB in a mode with low wind speed and 45.2dB in the mode with the highest wind speed.
Conversely, this device’s deodorizing capability was not very effective, as it took 22 minutes to eliminate the smell of cat urine. Also, the annual cost is about $95, enough to replace the body in 3 years. So even though the price of the unit is low, the annual costs will add significantly to your investment.
If total cost is a top concern, we recommend the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX HP302. But if getting rid of bad smells is your top priority, go for either the Airmega Mighty or Airmega 200M, which are also in the same price range.

The Honeywell True HEPA Air Purifier Allergen Plus Series HPA300 boasts excellent dust collection and deodorizing capabilities, but its major drawback is the lack of an automatic mode. The price is reasonable at about $270, but considering the high running costs, this option may get expensive in the long-term.
This air purifier achieved a 99.9% removal rate for all particle sizes and eliminated the odor of cat urine in roughly 8 minutes. However, this purifier doesn’t have an automatic mode, so you'll need to manually adjust the airflow. That’s not particularly user-friendly when you’re just getting home or while cooking dinner.
Another disadvantage is the annual running cost of $180. The pre-filter should be replaced every 3 months, which increases the running cost. Noise is also a concern. While other purifiers on this list operate below 30dB in lower settings, this model emitted 41.6dB in its lowest mode, so we don’t recommend it for use in the bedroom.
If you're looking for comparable air-purifying capability in the same price range, we highly recommend COWAY's Airmega 250, which is also more user-friendly. It features an automatic mode and can also save you more than $100 in annual running costs.

Blueair's Blue Pure 311 Auto is a cylindrical air purifier that covers 388 square feet and is equipped with an automatic mode. It features a stylish design, and you can choose from 5 colors, but its performance doesn't match that of higher-end products.
In fact, even with larger particle sizes from 0.3 micron to 1 micron, the removal rate was only 99.4 to 99.7%, which isn’t impressive compared to the top-tier purifiers on this list. In addition, the results were not very promising for smaller particle sizes, such as odors. It took 18 minutes to eliminate the smell of cat urine.
This product, like the same manufacturer's Blue Pure 311i Max, is also difficult to maintain. Removing the pre-filter and main filter can be challenging and may make maintenance a hassle.
If you're willing to spend about $250 on this product, you might want to consider the COWAY's Airmega Mighty or the Airmega 200M instead. Those options can clean the air more effectively and provide performance that matches the price.

Blueair's Blue Pure 211+ Auto is a cylindrical air purifier that can cover 550 square feet. Although it boasts top-of-the-line dust-collection capabilities, its ratings took a hit due to its low deodorization capability and the effort required for maintenance.
In our test of dust-collection efficiency, this purifier’s performance surpassed that of the high-performing Dyson's Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde. It removed 99.99% of the 0.5 micron and 1 micron particles, and also eliminated 99.92% of the 0.1 micron particles. However, this device fell short when it came to deodorization. As it took 22 minutes to remove the smell of cat urine, this purifier wouldn’t be effective in places where bad smells are a recurring concern.
This purifier is equipped with an auto mode, which automatically adjusts the fan speed depending on the quality of the air. While the auto mode can potentially save you money on electricity, running costs such as filter replacements can amount to around $140 per year. If price is a concern, we don’t recommend this purifier.
This product excels particularly in dust collection, and it’s suitable for large rooms. However, considering the less-than-stellar deodorizing and total cost, you might be happier with a different purifier.

Levoit's Vital 100 True HEPA Air Purifier Vital 100 is both affordable and has low annual costs. However, it also doesn’t perform as well as other models on this list, so if you decide to buy it, we recommend you use it in bedrooms or smaller rooms.
The air-purifying capacity can somewhat eliminate dust and allergens, but it seemed to have a hard time removing cooking and pet odors. It recorded a removal rate of 99.3% to 99.7% for particle sizes from 0.1 to 1 micron. But odor removal took more than 10 times as long as the highest-performing Dyson Purifier Big + Quiet Formaldehyde.
This purifier’s replacement filter is affordable at about $30, with a total annual cost of around $60. The main unit price is also reasonable at about $120, but note that this purifier does not include an automatic mode. Since the wind volume does not adjust automatically, this purifier won't operate more efficiently and conserve energy when the air is less polluted.
If you're looking to tackle dust and allergens in a bedroom or a smaller room, this model may be a good idea. However, if you can increase your budget slightly, you’ll likely be more satisfied with COWAY's Airmega Mighty or Airmega 200M.

Afloia's Kilo Air Purifier may have a weaker deodorization ability compared to other purifiers, but it excels in dust collection. The unit price is affordable at around $100, but theannual costs exceed the unit price, so you shouldn't buy it just because it looks cheap at the outset.
This purifier’s dust-collection delivered excellent results despite its low price. It recorded a removal rate of over 99.8% for all particle sizes during our test, and could quickly purify the air, even in large rooms. That said, this purifier fell short when it came to getting rid of odors. It took 16 minutes to completely remove the smell of cat urine.
In addition, this purifier does not come equipped with an automatic mode and instead employs a simple system that allows for 3 levels of wind power adjustment. Because the air volume doesn't adjust automatically, you may have to change the settings when you come home from work or while you’re cooking, so this model isn’t particularly user-friendly. Another downside is the annual cost of $121. If you're looking for a purifier with excellent dust collection and great value, we recommend Shark's NeverChange Air Purifier MAX instead. Since that model doesn't have any running costs, it can save you money over a period of more than four years.
That said, the Kilo Air Purifier’s compact dimensions of 7.6 inches wide, 7.6 inches deep, and 15 inches tall is a unique advantage. If you need to get rid of dust in a narrow room, this purifier is worth considering.

The Core 300 Air Purifier by Levoit is inferior in both deodorizing and dust-collection capabilities in comparison to other products. In particular, it doesn’t really get rid of bad smells, so if odor removal is a top priority, we recommend you choose the Airmega Mighty or Airmega 200M instead.
During our testing, the odor of cat urine was not sufficiently removed even after 30 minutes of purifier operation, and the smell of ammonia was still noticeable after 30 minutes. On the other hand, considering the small size of the main body, the dust-collection efficiency is proportionate, and this purifier achieved a removal rate of 97% for all particle sizes.
There’s no remote control or app integration, and the operation method is simple: you just touch the display on the upper part of the main unit to turn it on. This model isn’t equipped with an automatic mode or an air-quality indicator, so you need to adjust the mode manually.
This purifier’s compact size of 8.7 inches wide, 8.7 inches deep, and 14.2 inches high is an advantage. However, if you have plenty of space, there are better models available on this list.

At mybest, we define the best air purifiers as quiet devices that can collect fine dust, deodorize effectively, and clean the air automatically.
To find the best products, we gathered 17 popular air purifiers from various manufacturers' latest lines and vetted them rigorously based on the following seven points:
Products we tested
For high dust-collection capabilities, we set the standard for air purifiers as "a product that quickly removes particles from dust, pollutants, and odors and effectively cleans the air."
Operate the smoke machine inside the acrylic box for 0.5 seconds. Once the box is filled with smoke, remove the smoke machine and run the air purifier. Measure the particle concentration every second using a particle counter, and compare the number of particles with diameters of 0.3 micron, 0.5 micron, and 1 micron before operation, and one minute, 30 seconds after operation. The higher the removal rate, the more we recommend the purifier. We scored the recommendation based on this.
The air purifier operated in its most powerful mode
For a purifier with high deodorizing power, we established the standard as "a product that can immediately eliminate the smell of pet urine."
We left the odor-causing substance in the acrylic box until it was filled with the odor. Once it was filled, we removed it and operated the deodorizer in its most powerful mode.
Mr. Eiichi Ishikawa, a professional odor judge, checked the smell in the acrylic box one minute later and then every two minutes afterward, determining the strength of the odor. Based on this, we scored the recommended level for each product.
Odorous substance: Cat urine-soaked litter in the litter box
Inspection equipment: Acrylic box (1.1m wide x 1.1m deep x 1.3m high)
The deodorizer operated in its most powerful mode
The time it took to complete deodorization
We set the standard for an easy-to-use air purifier as “a product that can automatically detect dirt and odors anywhere in the room and maintains clean air even if left unattended.”
Spray the deodorant for 5 seconds and then wait to see if the air purifier's sensor reacted. The faster it responded, even from a distance, the higher the rating, and we scored it accordingly.
The quality of the dust sensor sensitivity
The number of mode choices
The presence or absence of odor sensors
For an air purifier that operates quietly, we established the standard as a ”product that is almost silent and can be used even when sleeping."
We positioned a noise meter 5 feet away from the air purifier in a bedroom setting, assuming it would be placed bedside, and operated it. Assuming the purifier would be used during sleep, we used the quietest mode, and we scored the recommendations based on how quiet the operating noise was, recommending quieter machines more highly.
Ambient noise: Around 25dB
Measurement distance: 5 feet
For a purifier with low running costs, we set the standard as "a product in which the filter lasts for several years, and the cost of electricity and replacement filters is low."
The testers checked each product, calculating the annual cost based on the recommended frequency of filter changes and price. We scored the recommendation level for each product.
The price of replacement filters per year
Annual power consumption (measured in auto mode when the air is clean)
For an air purifier that’s easy to maintain, we defined the criteria as a "product which requires almost no filter cleaning and in which the filter can be easily removed."
The testers checked each product, scoring them point by point, and quantified the recommendation level for each product.
The number of filters that require maintenance
Whether it is necessary to turn the main unit upside down when attaching or removing the filter
The innovation in the shape of the filters
For an air purifier with smart features, we set the standard as " product that allows detailed monitoring in the app and the main body that is easy to set up."
The completeness of the remote control function
Air-quality-checking function (app)
The comprehensiveness of the air-quality-checking function (main body)
