What Exactly Is Wheat Beer? And Why Try Japanese Ones?

What Exactly Is Wheat Beer? And Why Try Japanese Ones?

Wheat beer is known in Japan mainly as white beer, and although there are different types, they all use wheat or wheat malt. They have a distinct white or pale color, and the taste is moderately bitter, mildly acidic, and subtly sweet. They can also be hoppy and foamy with a light mouthfeel.

How to Choose a Wheat Beer - Buying Guide

Here are some essential points to keep in mind when choosing a Japanese wheat beer to purchase.

1

Choose Based on the Type of White Beer

There are two main types of white beer, depending on differences in production methods and other factors. Most white beers fall into two categories: witbier, known as Belgian white, and German weissbier, which includes weizen like the ones we tested here. Let's look at weizen first.

German Weizen Beer Have Sweet Wheat Flavors and Are Easy to Drink

German Weizen Beer Have Sweet Wheat Flavors and Are Easy to Drink

Weizen, which means "wheat" in German, is a beer in which wheat malt accounts for more than 50 percent of its ingredients. Weizen is characterized by its having little bitter hops flavor and a refreshing taste. It is sometimes described as drinkable bread because of its creamy texture with fine bubbles and the subtle sweetness of wheat.

It is a style of beer that makes you want to drink it in large gulps while enjoying the fruity banana-like aroma characteristic of Weizen yeast and the spicy aroma of cloves and nutmeg. You may also hear it referred to as Bavarian-style wheat beer.

Belgian Whites Are Fragrant and Come With Distinct Flavors

Belgian Whites Are Fragrant and Come With Distinct Flavors

Belgian white ales are characterized by their cloudy white appearance. This beer offers a fluffy head, and its flavor profile includes a subtle sourness, with a refreshing, fruity sweetness. In addition, coriander and orange peel are used in the production process, giving it a rich spice flavor.

The easy-drinking and exquisite flavor, distinctly different from the rich taste of malt, has been popular in Belgium for a long time. It is recommended to drink it at 45 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit, as the spice and fruit flavors will be hidden if it is too cold. One brand you may be familiar with is Blue Moon.

2

Japanese Wheat Beers Compared to Other Countries'

Japanese Wheat Beers Compared to Other Countries'

Belgian whites typically carry the fruity and refreshing scents of coriander and bitter orange peel. If you want the taste of an original authentic wheat beer, we recommend trying a Belgian white. Hoegaarden and Blue Moon are representative products.

If you like a bready beer, that's what you'll get with a German weizen. They're best paired with hearty foods like sausages, meat, cheese, and so on. If you enjoy having a pint with dinner or are just looking for something easy to drink, we recommend a German wheat beer.

Japan has finally caught on to the craft beer scene in recent years. Even large beer companies are starting to create specialty brews, and white beers are not hard to find. If you have a go-to favorite, why not give their white beers a shot first? Here are some examples of Japanese wheat beers made by major manufacturers.

  • Sapporo Brewery: White Belg, Yebisu Kamiyabi
  • Kirin Brewery: Grand Kirin White Ale
  • Minoh Brewery: Yuzoho White, Weizen

Japanese wheat beers generally tend toward milder flavors than German or Belgian ones. They have a subtler sweetness, and don't include as many strong spices such as orange peel like used in Belgian whites.

Thus, we especially recommend trying out a Japanese wheat beer if you are either a newcomer to drinking wheat beers, or you enjoy a beer with a pleasant mouthfeel, subtler sweetness and all-around milder flavor.

mybest's Top Choice! A Great Beer for All Tastes and Occasions

Gran Kirin White Ale was created based on a concept of beauty and drinkability. It's meant to appeal to all drinkers, whether they are beer connoisseurs or novices. Kirin was also concerned with crafting a brew that can be enjoyed every day, but still tastes like something special.

Our tasters describe it as having a fruity aroma similar to chardonnay, and a luxurious taste like champagne. The flavors come from Nelson Sauvin Hops from New Zealand, which are reminiscent of white grapes and white wine. Even our tasters who said they weren't used to beer thoroughly enjoyed this one.

This is available at convenience stores and supermarkets in Japan, so give this a try next time! We recommend it without hesitation!

Many people were surprised to learn that White Belg is a happoshu, which means it contains almost no barley malt and a large amount of alcoholic spirits. The taste is just like a Belgian white beer.

The fruity, refreshing sweetness drawn from coriander and orange peel is well-balanced with the aroma of hops. It goes well with cold, refreshing dishes. We recommend this for those who want to try white beer without any bitterness from barley and hops.

Strong Wheat Flavor Like Bread and a Classic Weizen Taste

Ginga Kogen Beer's hefeweizen is made in a brewery in Iwate Prefecture using traditional southern German methods. It sure tastes like a German Weizen beer, with a strong wheat flavor like biting into a loaf of yeasty bread.

It has only moderate bitterness and is easy to drink, so it is recommended even for those who are infrequent beer drinkers. Note that the label changed in 2020, so some of our photos look different.

Strong Bitter and Acidic Hop Flavors May Be Difficult for Some to Appreciate

Tokyo Blues Single Hop Wheat is made with Nelson Sauvin hops, which is a kind of hops from New Zealand that have very similar tastes and aromas to white wine and white grapes.

This beer has that elegant, fruity aroma typical of Nelson Sauvin hops. But when you taste it, a sourness hits you first and a bitterness follows and lingers, possibly making it an acquired taste.

How We Tested the Wheat Beers

To figure out the best Japanese wheat beers, we gathered the 26 best-selling products on e-commerce sites popular in Japan, like Amazon, Rakuten, Kakaku.com, and Yahoo! Shopping, and had members of our editing department conduct a taste-test on all of the products.

Test ① Deliciousness

Test ① Deliciousness

When choosing between wheat beers, obviously, the taste will be your primary concern. What kind of taste characteristics does each of the products have? Find out below.

Six beer-loving members of our editorial staff drank and compared all 26 kinds of wheat beers and rated their tastiness on a scale of 0.1 to 5.0. Then we took the average and gave it an overall rating score.

Test Highlight: Beers With Unique Flavors Came Out on Top!

Test Highlight: Beers With Unique Flavors Came Out on Top!

All of the white beers received relatively high overall ratings, with scores of 3.5 or higher. The top-ranked white beers were those with distinct flavors in addition to their having notes of fruitiness and being easy to drink.

Many top-ranked white beers had unique flavor profiles, ranging from fruity white beers with the aroma of the hops used being prominent, to beers with intense flavors of secondary ingredients. The wheat used in making the products gave them a mellow, bread-like sweetness and aroma which allowed the layering of many different tastes on top.

Test Highlight: Aromatic Beers With Less Bitterness Were Popular

Test Highlight: Aromatic Beers With Less Bitterness Were Popular

We overlapped the taste profiles of each of the products and found that many of the beers showed similarities in terms of taste. The chart shows that many beers are moderate in bitterness, acidity, and body, and rich in aroma and hoppiness.

White beers rated 3.5 or higher had a slightly stronger aroma than the other beers. The bitterness was also more subdued. Each beer has its own characteristics, even among beers with similar tastes, so please refer to the flavor radar chart for each product to find the ones that best suit your taste.

Tips for Enjoying Wheat Beer

Here are some tips for you to use so as to get the most enjoyment from your white beer! We'll cover the ideal drinking temperature, and what kind of foods to pair well with wheat beer.

Don't Chill It Too Much, and Shake It Up (Gently)

Don't Chill It Too Much, and Shake It Up (Gently)
Source:my-best.com

We recommend against serving white beer at ice-cold temperatures. The soft aromas and subtle sweetness of the brew will be reduced and go unnoticed by your taste buds at such temperatures. It should be left in the refrigerator for an hour or two to reach the perfect drinking temperature.

Before drinking, the trick is to turn the bottle or can over and back gently before pouring, so that the yeast that has settled in the bottom can be reabsorbed and mixed back into the beer. Pour it into a tumbler or tulip-shaped glass with a relatively wide opening, which will help release the aromas as you drink, and the exposure to air will bring out the beer's fruitiness.

Pair It With White Colored Foods or Light Snacks Such as Seafood or Vegetables

Pair It With White Colored Foods or Light Snacks Such as Seafood or Vegetables

When you think of pairing foods with a drink, you can either think in terms of flavor combinations or visually pleasing aesthetics. For the former, refreshing white beer goes well with seafood and vegetable snacks, as well as with sour or light foods such as carpaccio or sautéed seafood, wine-steamed mussels, vinegar-based salads, and pickles.

In terms of the latter, white-colored foods such as cheese and chicken tenderloins would make for a great pairing with white beer for an aesthetic arrangement.

Sweet foods also make for a great snack while enjoying a white beer. Candied chocolate orange peels, cheesecake, tarts, and chocolates are all recommended.
